Two Eagles recorded 10-plus kills

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a Mid-American Conference affair to league front-runner, Bowling Green State University, in three sets (14-25, 20-25, 16-25) this afternoon, March 12, inside BGSU's Stroh Center. EMU (6-8, 6-8 MAC) could not  contain the Falcons' (15-0, 15-0 MAC) hot attack percentage of .333 (53-10-129).

Senior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) paced the Eagles offensively with 14 kills, while classmate April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest) was the second EMU player to reach double-figures with 10 kills. Additionally, sophomore Alayna Jansky (Mukwonago, Wis.-Mukwonago) and redshirt sophomore Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) added five each, respectively.

Guiding the Green and White attack was sophomore Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge), who notched 34 assists to go along with seven digs

Defensively, four Eagles recorded 10-plus digs on the afternoon. Strefling, Jansky, and freshman Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) each dug 13 balls, while junior Mackenzie Garis (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) garnered 11. Chase also led the Green and White with three total blocks.

Eastern Michigan struggled offensively, as the Eagles posted a .188 attack percentage (36-14-117), while Bowling Green boasted a .333 percentage (53-10-129). Both teams tallied four total blocks, while the Falcons led in every other statistical category: kills (53-36), assists (47-36), service aces (3-1), and digs (59-58).

The scoring went back-and-forth to start the opening set with the score tied at 13-all. However, the Falcons gained momentum and posted a 12-1 run to claim the first set, 25-14.

Down one set, the Eagles struck first with a 3-2 jump to start the second set. Eastern Michigan continued its offensive spark to gain an 8-4 advantage over BGSU. However, Bowling Green went on a 7-3 scoring drive to tie up the set at 12-apiece. The back-and-forth affair continued over the next few possessions until the Falcons sparked an 11-7 run to take the second game, 25-20. BGSU held the 2-0 edge for the match.

Bowling Green continued its momentum with a 6-2 lead to start the third set. However, the Eagles posted a 4-3 run to cut the Falcons' edge to three, 9-6. A Houston kill stopped a 4-0 BGSU run and sparked a 4-0 scoring drive for the Eagles to trail by three, 13-10. The Falcons closed the set on a 12-5 run to seal the 25-16 victory to claim the match, 3-0.

Eastern Michigan will continue its five-game road trip Tuesday, March 16 at Central Michigan University. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the McGuirk Arena.
