YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University tennis team swept Oakland University inside the Chippewa Club Friday, Feb. 26, in non-conference doubleheader action. Both matches ended with a 6-1 win for the Eagles, as they moved to 5-4 in the 2021 spring season.

"We had a really good day today where everyone contributed a win in either singles or doubles." said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman "Luisa was phenomenal with four wins on the day. Emma-Lou and Isabelle also played some fantastic tennis. Even shorthanded, Oakland is tough, scrappy, and well coached. We really had to play tough to get both wins today."

Match 1: EMU 6, OU 1

EMU faced an Oakland team that was not at full strength, as the Golden Grizzlies were forced to default at No. 3 doubles and give freshman Vered Bert (Ra'Anana, Israel-Aviv) and redshirt senior Essence Eaton (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield Lathrup) the first win of the day. Redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) then claimed the doubles point for the team from the No. 1 spot, 6-2. At No. 2, redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) won 6-2 as well, to complete the doubles sweep.

Eaton, in the No. 6 spot again earned the win by default, moving to singles play. Pelayo continued her dominance at the No. 3 slot by winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Pommiers finished next, 6-0, 6-2, clinching the match victory for the Green and White, as well as her first win at the No. 4 spot this season. Redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) and redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem)) both secured wins in straight-sets as well, finishing 7-6, 6-2, and 6-4, 7-6, respectively. Eastern claimed the first match of the day, 6-1, over OU.

Match 2: EMU 6, OU 1

Moving into the second match of the day against Oakland, Eastern again claimed the doubles point. It was Pelayo and Whitney again, this time in the No. 2 spot. The pairing moves to 5-4 overall this season. Bert and Eaton were also awarded their second win on the day by default at No. 3.

In singles action Pommiers was first to victory, playing again at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Pelayo followed and earned her fourth win of the day, 6-0, 6-1, and moves to 8-1 overall this year. The Porto, Portugal native's win was also her first at No. 2. Ganesan (6-2, 6-2) and Popma (7-6, 2-6, 1-0) also came out victorious from the No. 4 and No. 1 spot, respectively. This time it was Bert who received the singles win by default at No. 6, as the Eagles defeat the Golden Grizzlies 6-1 and sweep the doubleheader.

With the matchup at Butler University postponed, Eastern will not play again until Saturday, March 6, when they take the short trip to Rochester to matchup with Oakland University again. The day will again feature two matches, with the first beginning at 1 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m.
