DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University tennis team defeated Wayne State University Sunday, Feb. 21, 4-3, to move to 3-4 this season.

"Wayne State is an extremely talented team that is put together well, especially indoors." said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman "They played great offensive tennis on a fast surface that really caused us to have to make major adjustments throughout the match. We never gave up and battled back in both singles and doubles to sneak out a road win."

The Green and White came out hot in doubles play as the No. 3 spot of redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) and redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour-Saint Dominique Pau) claimed the first win of the day, 6-1. The pairing of redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) secured the doubles point for the Eagles, winning a hard fought battle 7-6.

Ganesan was the first to strike in singles action, besting the competition 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, from the No. 2 spot. Pommiers was next to earn Eastern a point, winning in straight sets at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-1. Redshirt junior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) won a hard fought match in the No. 3 spots, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, capturing the victory for EMU.

Eastern Michigan returns home to the Chippewa Club to welcome Oakland University Friday, Feb. 26, for doubleheader action scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Keep up with everything EMU tennis by going to EMUEagles.com or following us on Twitter or Instagram.
