YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University football team hosted its 59th annual football banquet Sunday, Dec. 5, at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest. The banquet served as the celebration of the team's 2021 individual award winners, which were announced by members of the EMU football coaching staff.
Junior wide receiver Hassan Beydoun (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) was named the team's Most Valuable Player. One of this year's nominees for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the nation's best former walk-on, Beydoun has been a critical factor in the explosiveness of the EMU offense this year.
Beydoun has recorded three games with 10+ catches this season. He was electric in EMU's win at Toledo, Nov. 2. He finished the game with a career-high 197 reception yards on 12 catches. Additionally, the wide out's effort is the 14th best by any player in the NCAA this season. The 197 yards is the most by any Eagle receiver in a game this year and the second-best effort by any player in the MAC.
The Dearborn, Mich. native hauled in a season-long 64-yard touchdown in EMU's opening drive of the second half against the Rockets. The reception was the second-longest of Beydoun's career, just two yards shy of the 66-yard catch he recorded at Western Michigan, Dec. 5, 2020.
Senior quarterback Ben Bryant (La Grange, Ill.-Lyons Twp.-Cincinnati) was tabbed as the James M. "Bingo" Brown award recipient, given to the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player. Bryant ranks first in the MAC and 12th nationally with a 69 percent completion clip in 2021. His 2,921 yards passing ranks second in the league and 29th in the country, while his 243.4 passing yards per contest sits at third in the MAC, and ranks 39th in the NCAA. Bryant's current completion percentage ranks second best for any Eastern player since the turn of the century.
Earning the team's John E. Borowiec Most Valuable Defensive Player Award, the Theme Award, and the Committed to Excellence Award was sophomore defensive lineman Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Riverside City). Ramirez has dominated on the defensive line this season. He ranks 10th in the MAC with 6.0 sacks, a career-best mark . The Lake Alfred, Fla. native is third on the team with 59 tackles this season (31 solo, 28 assisted), and leads the team with 10.5 tackles for loss.
As a unit, EMU has forced 15 turnovers in 2021, and has scored points off of 13 (9 touchdowns, 4 field goals). Eastern Michigan has scored 75 points off those turnovers, twice as a direct result of the play, and 11 times in its subsequent offensive possession. Ramirez has forced a team-leading three fumbles this season. Overall, in 22 career games played, he has 86 tackles, 13.0 TFLS, eight sacks, four pass deflections, and four forced fumbles.
The Special Teams Most Valuable Player honor went to senior punter Jake Julien (Barrie, Ontario-North Collegiate). A critical force on special teams, Julien, the seven-time MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week honoree, has slotted himself as the best in school history. EMU's all-time record holder in punt average at 44.0 yards per kick, Julien has 9,494 yards on 216 tries. In 53 career contests, he has 50 kicks of 50-or-more yards to go along with 69 placed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Senior offensive lineman Mike Van Hoeven (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) took home both the Harold E. Sponberg Down Lineman Award and the Elton J. Rynearson Scholar-Athlete Award. It was the second consecutive season that he collected the Scholar Athlete Award.
A 2021 Academic All-District honoree by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Van Hoeven is the first Eastern Michigan football student-athlete to be recognized four times in a career (2018-21) by the organization.
One of the most reliable offensive lineman in the Mid-American Conference, Van Hoeven is the anchor for the EMU scoring unit. The team's center, Van Hoeven has started all 12 games for the Green and White this season, helping the offense to impressive levels of success in 2021.
The E-Gridiron group's newcomers of the year honors went to senior running back Jawon Hamilton (Miami, Fla.-South Dade-UCF-James Madison) for his offensive efforts and to junior defensive back Jarrett Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Paramus Catholic-Rutgers) for his season performance on defense.
Hamilton led the rushing attack with 631 yards on 101 carries and four touchdowns. His best performance came against Western Michigan, Nov. 16, when he torched the Broncos for a career-best 187 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, Paul notched 45 tackles (27 solo, 18 assist) and four tackles-for-loss while playing in all 12 regular season games for Eastern. He also deflected five passes while forcing a fumble.
Junior defensive back Thomas Shorack (Renton, Wash.-O'Dea-Arizona State), freshman quarterback Baron May (New Philadelphia, Ohio-New Philadelphia), and freshman linebacker Zach Mowchan (Dillsburg Pa.-Northern York), earned the team's Scout Team Player of the Year award for their efforts preparing the team for competition each week on special teams, offense, and defense, respectively.
Completing the awards handed out by Head Coach Chris Creighton and his staff was the Torchbearer Leader Award, given to senior tight end Thomas Odukoya (Almere, Netherlands-Helen Parkhurst-Garden City C.C.). Considered one of the most prolific blocking tight ends in the nation, Odukoya is one of the leaders, on and off the field, for Eastern Michigan. A 2021 team captain and former bearer of the No. 2, "Deuce" jersey (considered the program's top honor), Odukoya has been impressive in his senior campaign. A multiple-time watch list honoree for the Campbell Trophy, Wuerffel Trophy, and Mackey Award, Odukoya has hauled in 12 receptions for 115 yards this season. He scored a touchdown in EMU's game at Bowling Green, Oct. 23, and has started each contest for the Eagles this season. This season marks the first All-MAC honors for Odukoya.
The Eastern Michigan careers of 13 program-defining student-athletes were honored at the event: Bryson Cannon (Columbia, S.C.-Dutch Fork-Independence C.C.), Jake Donnellon (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Gabriel Richard), Hamilton, Jeff Hubbard (Atlanta, Ga.-Woodward Academy), Julien, Alvinoski LaFleur (Lake Charles, La.-LaGrange-Coffeyville C.C.), Freddie McGee III (Canton, Mich.-Salem), Terry Myrick (Austell, Ga.-Woodward Academy), Odukoya, Turan Rush (Charleston West Side, W.Va.-Capital-Antelope Valley), Woo Scott Sr. (Little Rock, Ark.-J.A. Fair-Independence C.C.), Michael Smith Jr. (Lakeland, Fla.-Frostproof), and Van Hoeven.
EMU put together yet another impressive season in 2021, adding to the success that has come to define the last eight years. With its seven regular-season wins, Eastern has already clinched a winning record, the third under Creighton; Prior to Creighton's arrival, EMU had not had a winning record since the 1989 season.
The Eagles will play in their fourth bowl game in the previous six seasons. Prior to 2016, Eastern had reached bowl eligibility just twice in its history and had earned the opportunity to play in a postseason bowl just once (1987 California Bowl). Additionally, Eastern earned bowl eligibility for the third consecutive season in 2021 (excluding COVID-shortened 2020 season), the first such occurrence in program history.
The 2021 regular season had plenty of exciting moments. One of the most memorable occasions in recent EMU history, the Eagles erupted for a 52-49 win over MAC-West rival Toledo, Nov. 2. It was the program's first victory inside the Glass Bowl (UT's home stadium) since the 1999 season. Coming into the game, Eastern had lost 10 consecutive road games to Toledo. EMU's most impressive home win came in Week 11, when the Green and White used late-game defensive heroics to upend in-state foe Western Michigan, 22-21, on Senior Night in the Factory. The victory marked the third straight for Eastern over Western, the best stretch for the program since it notched the same number between 2011-13.
Eastern Michigan will take on Liberty University in the 23rd Annual LendingTree Bowl Saturday, Dec. 18, at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Kickoff for the game will be at 5:45 p.m. ET (4:45 p.m. CT) on ESPN. Tickets for the LendingTree Bowl will go on sale Monday, Dec. 6, at 8:30 a.m. through the EMU Athletics Ticket Office. Tickets can be ordered online through EMUEagles.com/tickets or by calling 734.487.3669. All EMU fans are encouraged to buy their tickets to the LendingTree Bowl through the EMU Athletics Ticket Office since bowl ticket sales are a critical component for future bowl consideration.
