YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team got a 36-point showing from the bench on the way to a 94-66 victory against the Goshen Maple Leafs at home Friday, Nov. 5.
The Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by freshman Noah Farrakhan (Newark, N.J.-The Patrick School (East Carolina)), who had 18 points and two steals. Classmate Colin Golson (Detroit, Mich.- Ferndale (Siena)) added 18 points, and senior Darion Spottsville (Phoenix, Ariz-Shadow Mountain (South Mountain C.C.)) chipped in as well with 16 points, four assists, four steals, and two blocks. Warming up from deep, senior Thomas Binelli (Bologna, Italy-Bergen Catholic (Monroe)) hit 4-of-9 (.444) from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points in the contest.
The Eagles' defense was effective at taking away the basketball in the game, forcing 20 Goshen turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 28 points on the other end of the floor. Spottsville's four steals led the way individually for the Eagles.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 32-19 advantage, EMU went on a 10-0 run with 8:13 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from senior Monty Scott (Union, N.J.-St. Benedict's Prep (Portland State)), to increase its lead to 42-19. The Eagles then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 56-33 advantage. Eastern did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 28 of its 56 points close to the basket.
Eastern Michigan kept its lead intact, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Farrakhan's jumper, to grow the lead to 85-58 with 4:35 to go in the contest. The Eagles kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 94-66 win. EMU got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 38 total points.
