Junior kicker Chad Ryland earned the honor for the seventh time in his career
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University junior kicker Chad Ryland (Lebanon, Pa.-Cedar Crest) collected Mid-American Conference West Division Special Teams Player of the Week honors, the league announced today, Nov. 22. It marks the third time in 2021 that Ryland has garnered the accolade and the seventh time overall in his career.
Already the program's all-time record holder in PAT attempts, PAT makes, and longest field goal, Ryland set yet another record in the 22-21 victory over Western Michigan, Nov. 16. The Lebanon, Pa. native hit five field goals, the most ever in a single game for the program.
EMU has had a kicker convert four field goals in a game on eight different occasions. Ryland is now one of only two players in program history to have multiple games with four-or-more field goal makes. He joins Andrew Wellock (2003-07) on that shortlist.
Overall, he had 16 points in EMU's game against the Broncos, and is now just two points behind Wellock for the most points in EMU history (299). Furthermore, his five makes push his streak of consecutive field goals made to 15, the second-longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Eastern will look to close its regular season with yet another rivalry win as it travels north for a Black Friday matchup with Central Michigan, Nov. 26. Game time is set for 12 p.m. inside Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Eastern Michigan (7-4, 4-3 MAC) is coming off a thrilling come-from-behind victory over I-94 rival, Western Michigan. The Chippewas (7-4, 5-2 MAC) have won three-in-a-row after upending Ball State, 37-17, last week in Muncie, Ind., Nov. 17.
The game will be televised on ESPNU. WEMU (89.1 FM) and the Varsity Network app will provide audio coverage of the game with Matt Shepard and Tom Helmer calling the action from the field.
