Bryce McBride and Ty Groce led the Eagles in double-figures
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program dropped a Mid-American Conference rematch with the University of Toledo, 96-63, tonight, Jan. 12 inside UT's Savage Arena. The Eagles (3-4, 1-3 MAC) couldn't contain the Rockets' (11-3, 6-0 MAC) lights-out shooting as UT shot 53.1 percent from beyond the arc (17-of-32).
Individually, redshirt junior Bryce McBride (Jackson, Tenn.-Southside (Dyersburg State C.C.)) paced the Eagles with his sixth-straight double-figure scoring performance with 12 points. The guard went 4-of-11 from the field, including two triples to go along with three assists. Redshirt senior Ty Groce (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln) also finished the night in double-digits adding 10 points with a team-high four helpers and four rebounds. Sophomore Drew Lowder (Jackson, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer (Holy Cross)) and redshirt junior Miles Gibson (Richmond, Va.-Milwood (Northwest Kansas Tech)) tallied nine and eight points, respectively, while senior Noah Morgan (Mount Vernon, N.Y.-Mount Vernon (Northwest Florida State)) recorded seven points and grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
Eastern finished the evening shooting 39.7 percent from the field (23-of-58), compared to Toledo's 55.1 clip (17-of-23). The Rockets held the three-point advantage, draining 17-of-32 (53.1 percent), but the Eagles made 10-of-15 free throws (66.7 percent). EMU posted the slight edge in fast break points (13-12), and steals (6-4). Toledo won the rebounding battle, 43-27 and dished out 26 assists.
Groce struck first for the Eagles with a short jumper to tie up the game at 2 apiece less than two minutes into the first half. Over the next three minutes, the Green and White sparked an 8-5 scoring drive highlighted by a McBride jumper and triple to give EMU an early 10-7 lead at the 16:45 mark. The scoring went back-and-forth over the next five minutes as Toledo hit four three-pointers to take the slight 21-20 edge heading into the second media timeout.
Eastern fell into a scoring dry spell for over two minutes until senior Yeikson Montero (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic-Redemption Christian (Pensacola State)) drained two at the charity stripe to take the 24-23 lead with 6:46 left before the half. But, the Rockets answered with five-straight triples for a 15-4 run to give UT the 10-point lead, 38-28, with three minutes remaining in the first. Over the next two minutes, Gibson scored six-straight points to cut Toledo's lead to eight, 42-34, but the Rockets' Marreon Jackson sunk a deep triple to give UT a 45-34 lead heading into the locker room.
Coming out of the locker room, Morgan drained a quick triple to start the second half, but Toledo posted a 19-8 scoring stint over the next six minutes highlighted by UT's 14th triple of the game to extend its lead to 19 (64-45) with 13:46 left in the second stanza. A Montero layup and McBride triple cut the Rockets lead to 23 (76-53) with eight minutes left, but Toledo's lights out shooting proved to be detrimental to the Eagles comeback. UT finished the game on a 20-10 run to claim the 96-63 victory.
Eastern will return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center when the Eagles host Calvin College Thursday, Jan. 14. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. with ESPN3 but there will be no radio broadcast.
