YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team routed Calvin University, to pick up its fourth win of the season, defeating the Knights 67-56, Thursday, Jan. 14, inside the Convocation Center. With the win over Calvin (0-1; 0-0 MIAA), the Eagles (4-4; 1-3 MAC) registered their second consecutive win at home. EMU found success in transition, recording 16 of their 67 points off of fast break points. This also marked Calvin's third meeting against a Mid-American Conference opponent and their first loss of the season.

Four Eagles scored in double-figures, two of which registered double-doubles. Redshirt senior Ty Groce (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln) paced all players with 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds to earn his third career double-double. Joining him with a double-double was redshirt junior Miles Gibson (Richmond, Va.-Milwood (Northwest Kansas Tech)), who contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds of his own, for his second career double-double. Junior Bryce McBride (Jackson, Tenn.-Southside (Dyersburg State C.C.)) and senior Yeikson Montero (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic-Redemption Christian Academy (Pensacola State)) produced strong numbers as well scoring 16 and 13 points, respectively. McBride also produced career-highs in free-throws made (10) and rebounds (8).

Eastern's defense came out strong from the tip, forcing Calvin to turnover the ball on their first three possessions. One turnover originated from a sophomore Drew Lowder (Jackson, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer (Holy Cross)) steal, which was converted into a fast break layup by Montero. This sparked the offense into a 10-0 run, over a three-minute stretch, highlighted by a statement three-pointer from Montero that increased Eastern's lead to five. The run continued until Calvin drained a three, setting the score at 14-5 with about 15 minutes left in the half.  With 12:18 on the clock, senior Darion Spottsville (Phoenix, Ariz.-Shadow Mountain (South Mountain C.C.)) muscled his way through the paint to drain a contested jump shot and record his first basket of the contest, bringing the score to 16-8, Eagles advantage.

Halfway through the first half, the Green and White obtained a short-lived double-digit advantage, courtesy of a McBride 3-pointer, ballooning the score to 21-10. Following that basket, Calvin began to build momentum as the Eagles' defense fell flat. EMU was scoreless for over five minutes, during which the Knights found a small run of their own, placing CU within two points and depleting the Eagles' advantage to 22-20. The scoring drought came to an end when Gibson made a layup with about four minutes left. The last few minutes of the first half were hard fought on both sides, as both teams exchanged baskets. During this time, Groce scored his 10th point courtesy of a nifty inside pass from Spottsville, tallying the score to 27-10. After the first twenty minutes, the Eagles headed into the locker room with a five-point advantage, 31-26.

Calvin continued to be persistent coming out of the locker room, inching within one point, 34-33, two minutes into the half. This sparked the Eagles into action, stimulating a 16-2 run over the next five minutes. Montero led the effort as he contributed eight points, highlighted by a gratifying shot beyond-the-arc for his 10th point of the contest. From there, the Green and White began to soar, establishing another double-digit lead with 14:19 on the clock, counting the score to 46-35. With less than seven minutes on the clock, Groce wrangled in his 10th rebound, to capture his third career double-double. However, Calvin refused to let up, as the Knights put together a 7-0 run to emerge within six points, 54-48, with just five minutes remaining in the game. Moments later, McBride sent a sharp pass underneath the basket to Gibson, who documented his 10th point of the night adding him to the list of Eagles registering double-doubles in the contest. The waning minutes of the game remained intense, but the Eagles held on to seal the 11-point victory, 67-56.

The Eagles posted a 42.6 field goal percentage (20-of-47) to best the Knights who shot 34.3 percent (23-of-67) from the field. The Green and White were stale beyond the arc, shooting 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) compared to Calvin who found more success shooting a 25 percent (7-of-28) efficiency. EMU outdid CU in fast break points (16-2), points in the paint (32-24) ,and defensive boards (33-20). However, Calvin held the advantage in offensive boards (15-8) and bench points (29-16).

Eastern will head north to Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Jan. 16 to face MAC-rival Central Michigan. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. on ESPN3. Eastern fell short in its last meeting on Dec. 29, 2020, losing to the Chippewas, 87-60.
