Turan Rush and Thomas Odukoya to serve as team captains
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's football team announced its team captains for the 2020 campaign. Providing leadership for the squad will be seniors Turan Rush (Charleston West Side, W. Va.-Capital-Antelope Valley) and Thomas Odukoya (Almere, Netherlands-Helen Parkhurst-Garden City C.C.).
"Thomas and Turan are two excellent choices to captain our football team," said Head Coach Chris Creighton. "They both love football, love their teammates and are driven to do all in their power to lead this program through another breakthrough."
Odukoya received Academic All-MAC honors in 2019 after appearing in all 13 games that EMU played. The Netherlands-born playmaker earned seven starts for the Eagles. He made a season-high 10-yard catch at Central Michigan (Oct. 5). Most recently, Odukoya was named a Fourth Team All-MAC Preseason All-MAC honoree by Phil Steele's College Football Preview, July 13.
In July, he was selected to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List for the second consecutive season. The John Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. He was also one of seven Mid-American Conference student-athletes named to the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy watchlist. The honor is known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service." Odukoya also earned preseason All-MAC honors on Athlon Sports' release from July.
"I am honored to have been selected as a team captain by my team for the 2020-21 season," said Odoukoya. "I can't wait for the season to get here."
Last year, Rush started 12 contests and recorded the third-most tackles-for-loss on the team with 6.0. He had a two-sack day against Ball State, Oct. 12, finished with six tackles against Toledo, Oct. 26, and had four stops against Kentucky, Sept. 7 and Western Michigan, Oct. 19.
A native of Charleston, W. Va., Rush was named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-MAC team in July, collecting fourth-team honors on that list. Rush was also picked as a Fourth-Team Preseason All-MAC selection by Athlon Sports.
"This is truly a blessing," Rush added. "I love this program with every drop of blood in my body. This program have given me the opportunity to accomplish my dreams and become a better man. I appreciate everyone that voted for me! This means the world to me words can't explain it."
