LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – For the 16th consecutive season, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball program was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence with the United States Marine Corps (USMC)/AVCA Team Academic Award, the organization announced today, July 20. The Green and White ended the 2019-20 academic year with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30.
"Winning the AVCA Team Academic Award has become one of our greatest yearly goals and the 16-year win streak is one of our proudest traditions," said Head Coach Darcy Dorton. "Each year, we look forward to sharing this with our alumni and celebrating the tradition they began."
Overall, the honor marks the 20th time in the program's history that EMU has earned the award, and makes it one of five teams nationally to earn the honor for 15-or-more consecutive years in the Division I category. The Eagles are joined by Indiana State (22), Bowling Green (20), Toledo (20), and Southern Illinois (15).
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 66 to its current number of 1,313; which broke the 2019 record by almost 200 (1,130).
