Four Eagles depart after honorable stints with the Green and White
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Although its season was cut short at the hands of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of its senior class.
The 2020 class is made up of four Eagles and includes Devin Hager (Commerce Twp., Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma), Nick Porretto (Geneva, Illinois-Geneva (McHenry)), and Brett Stenger (Kingsville, Ontario-Kingsville District (Indian Hills)).
Together the group notched better-than 80 wins, and highlighted their time in the Green and White with a trip to the Mid-American Conference Tournament's championship game in 2017, one year after earning a semifinal bid in the event.
From nearby Commerce Twp., Mich., Hager finished his career having appeared in 122 games for the Eagles, 93 of which were starts. A multi-positional asset to the team, he compiled an impressive .964 fielding percentage in his time at EMU, including a perfect 1.000 mark in 2020. The 5-foot-11 speedster racked up 65 hits, 24 RBIs, 34 runs, and a career .300 on-base percentage.
Also from the Mitten State is Hester, a left-handed pitcher and multiple-time team captain. The Coloma, Mich. native finished his career with 52 appearances in the "Script E," logging nearly 80 innings as a bullpen pitcher for the squad. The southpaw racked up 53 strikeouts while limiting opposing batters to below a .300 average in his time with the Eagles. Hester finished his Eastern career with one win on the bump.
A junior college transfer from the greater Chicago area, Porretto came to Eastern after spending time at McHenry Community College. Known for his high-speed fastball, Porretto made 15 appearances for EMU during the 2019 campaign, compiling more than 30 innings of work as one of the team's primary relievers. The Geneva, Ill. native finished his EMU career having stuck out 17 opposing hitters, including a career-high three against Oakland, April 3, 2019.
The lone senior that hails from north of the border, Stenger came to EMU by way of Indian Trails Community College. Once with the Green and White, the Kingsville, Ontario native saw action in five games as a relief pitcher, and earned one win along the way.
Although their 2020 season was cut short, there is no doubt that the four seniors highlighted in this piece were critical factors in the success of the program during their time with Eastern Michigan. The EMU Department of Athletics and baseball program thank the seniors for their tireless work ethic and proud representation of the University.
