Football's Opener at Kentucky Shifts to Thursday, Sept. 3

LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) — For fans looking forward to the 2020 football season, the wait just got a little shorter. Eastern Michigan University and the University of Kentucky announced today, June 16, that the teams will start 48 hours earlier than originally planned. Kickoff for the non-conference game was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, but will now be played Thursday, Sept. 3, at Kroger Field.
Broadcast information and a kickoff time will be announced at a later date.
The move became necessary after COVID-19 upended the nation's sporting schedule and caused the Kentucky Derby to be rescheduled from the first Saturday in May to Saturday, Sept. 5. It marks the first time since 1945 that the Kentucky Derby has been held outside the month of May and just the second time since 1875.
The last time Eastern opened the season on a Thursday night came during the 2012 season when the Eagles trekked to Muncie, Ind. to battle Ball State University.
Overall, it will be the third meeting between EMU and UK. Last year, the Wildcats notched a 38-17 triumph, Sept. 7, 2019, after collecting a 24-20 win in 2017, Sept. 30.
Season tickets can be purchased by calling the Eastern Athletics Ticket Office at 734.487.3669, by going online to EMUEagles.com and clicking on Tickets along the top menu bar or once normal operations resume visit the Ticket Office located inside the Convocation Center from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
Season tickets are the most cost-effective way to enjoy a fall event in Washtenaw County and this season there are a variety of options available.
