The MAC honored 24 student-athletes for their academic and athletic accomplishments

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University's Aubrey Martin (Toronto, Ontario-Father John Redmond) and Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) were presented with the Medal of Excellence Award as part of the Mid-American Conference's "Awards Week," the league office announced today, June 2.

"The Medal of Excellence Award is a reinforcement of the core values that we as a conference and each of our member institutions all possess with excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and service," said MAC Commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher. "We congratulate all of our Medal of Excellence Award winners."

To be honored with the Medal of Excellence Award, student-athletes had to participate on the varsity level in a conference-sponsored sport and shown evidence of academic success with a minimum 3.50 accumulative grade-point average, exhibited athletics excellence, leadership and service.  Selection of the recipients was made by each MAC institution.

A three-time Academic All-MAC performer for the EMU women's soccer team, Martin defined the term "student-athlete," while donning the Green and White.

Holding a 3.99 GPA in biology, Martin made 13 appearances and a career-best eight starts on the pitch for the MAC runner-up Eagles in 2019. The Toronto native added an assist against Miami, Sept. 27 for her first-career point, and finished her career with nearly 2,200 minutes-played. In addition, she assisted the Eagles defense to seven shutouts over the course of her career.

An accomplished member of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team, Beckom II successfully balanced a demanding schedule on the track and in the classroom during his time with the Eagles. The Saginaw, Mich., native graduated this spring with a double major in Psychology and Communications.

A three-time Indoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC honoree and a two-time Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC selection, Beckom started the 2019 outdoor season on a winning note, claiming first prize in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.62 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, March 15-16. He also finished the campaign with high marks, setting a personal-best in the 100-meter dash at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships with a time of 10.66, while earning Second-Team All-MAC honors in the 4x100-meter relay as the Eagles clinched second place with a mark of 40.82. During his final indoor campaign, Beckom set his fastest time in the 60-meter dash as he clocked in at 6.90 during the preliminary heats at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 7-8, 2020.
