Eastern Shines in Classroom With 3.516 GPA in Winter 2020

Student-athletes posted the best semester (3.516) and cumulative (3.332) GPA in EMU history
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Persevering under unusual circumstances, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics posted its highest semester and cumulative grade point average in school history. With more than 430 student-athletes, Eastern recorded a 3.516 winter semester GPA. It bettered the previous best of 3.238 set in the fall of 2016. EMU also added a cumulative 3.332 GPA, another department best previously set in the fall of 2018 at 3.27.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, student-athletes overcame the challenges of moving to a virtual learning model midway through the semester. Overall, 86 percent (375) still earned a 3.0 GPA or higher for the winter semester and it marked the 21st semester in-a-row EMU posted an average GPA above 3.0.
"Our student-athletes continued to excel academically in the face of unprecedented circumstances," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "They utilized their resources, remained diligent in their studies, and collaborated with their faculty members to finish strong. Our academics staff was able to pivot in the middle of the semester and continue to provide student-athletes with the support they needed. Additionally, the focus from our coaches on the student-athletes' well-being, their constant contact with their teams and the reinforcement of the importance of finishing strong in the classroom was a huge factor in this success."
All of Eastern's sports had team GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Furthermore, 11 sports set new program records for semester GPA – baseball, football, men's basketball, gymnastics, men's cross country, men's golf, men's track & field, rowing, soccer, swimming & diving, and women's track & field.
Furthermore, there were 62 EMU student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs last semester, led by swimming & diving which had 10.
For the semester, women's gymnastics led all sports with a term GPA of 3.869 on EMU's 4.0 scale. Men's golf (3.754) was next, while men's cross country (3.751) was third. Women's soccer (3.722) and women's cross country (3.716) rounded out the top five programs for the winter semester.
Overall, a total of 330 student-athletes (76 percent) hold a cumulative GPA above 3.0, while 14 teams maintain a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
