Nyambane and Wygonik join the Eastern Michigan women's golf team next season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Golf Coach Stephanie Jennings announced today, April 21, that Tatyana Nyambane (Nairobi, Kenya-Nord Anglia International School Dubai) and Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) will be joining the Eagles for the 2020-21 season. They join Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) and Paige Zolciak (Perrysburg, Ohio-St. Ursula Academy), who were previously announced in November.

Nyambane, a freshman from the United Arab Emirates, posted a scoring average of 77.2 during the 2019 season. She won the NTPGA Junior Tour event in Frisco, Texas in 2019 with a score of 73, while notching a first-place finish at the Junior Masters Open Golf Tour at Abu Dhabi National Golf Course. Nyambane was tabbed as the U16 Outstanding Female Player of the Year and was also the runner-up at the 2017 Emirates Golf Club Junior Girls Tournament with a score of 76 at Majlis Golf Course.

"Tatyana has made some tremendous improvements in her game and her swing," Jennings added. "She works with teaching professional Joe Marshall at the Claude Harmon Golf Academy in Dubai, and together they have set a great path for her golf future.  As an Eagle, Tatyana will give our team the length off the tee that we love and the finesse around the greens that we need to score."

Wygonik, a freshman from Livonia Franklin High School, made school history as the only female golfer to qualify for the MHSAA State Championship all four years. She was also the first state finalist at Franklin and the program's first female golfer to receive all-state accolades. Wygonik posted a scoring average of 77.33 as a senior with six top-10 finishes and an eighth-place finish as the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals.

A two-time team captain, Wygonik received the Patriot of the Year Award as a sophomore  on top of receiving all-state recognition during her senior year. A three-time scholar athlete, Wygonik  won the City Championship in 2018, while helping the team claim back-to-back division titles in 2018 and 2019.

"Sophia is a very determined and gritty golfer which was displayed in her final round of the MHSAA Division I State tournament," said Jennings. "She finished with a round of 73 to move her into eighth place overall. In addition, Sophia 'fits the mold' of what is expected of any EMU golfer. She works hard, has a strong commitment to improvement and she has a genuine love for the game."
