EMU Athletics will recognize and share stories of the Class of 2020

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem) had a successful career in the Green and White, earning wins in both novice and varsity boats. Beginning her career in the Novice Eight, she was a member of the 2016 Head of the Grand and 2017 Lubber's Cup champion boats. Dutton was also part of the First Varsity Eight boat that recorded the program-best sixth-place finishes at both the 2018 and 2019 Head of the Hooch, as well as wins at the 2019 Cooper Invitational and the 2019 MACRA Championships. A member of the First Varsity Eight boat that raced at the Head of the Charles in 2017, the West Salem, Wis. native returned to Boston in 2019 and helped the Eagles to a program-best fifth-place finish at the event. As a member of the Second Varsity Four boat at the 2019 Head of the Grand, Dutton helped lead Eastern to a win over a Big Ten opponent for the first time since 2005.

Reflecting on her time at EMU, Dutton said: "One of my fondest memories after competing here for four years was this past fall when we raced in Boston. The Head of the Charles is the biggest rowing race in the world, and we had the opportunity to compete there once again. We were racing around 30 teams. We were seeded thirteenth and were underdogs. We made a bet with our coach that if we got a top-five finish he would have to drink pumpkin spice for the rest of the month. He hated anything to do with pumpkin spice so we took that bet. It was great racing weather and we were moving right off of the catch. We passed three boats in one of the most challenging courses to maneuver through. At the finish line we had nothing left and just waited for the results. We had one of the best races ever and we took fifth. We loaded up the trailer and had a surprise pumpkin spice latte waiting for coach, and he chugged it all. That trip was one for the books: we got to travel with the coaches, spend quality time with my teammates, and had a great race. I would go back and do it all again if I could."

Dutton has been named to the CAA Commissioner's Honor Roll twice, and will be graduating with a degree in exercise science.
