A look back at great moments in EMU Athletics history

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University has a long-standing traditional of athletic excellence. From a national championship in baseball at the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) level 50 years ago this season (1970), to hordes of Olympians, and multiple postseason basketball appearances. Throw in 150 team Mid-American Conference championships and it is easy to see why EMU had garnered so much respect around the country.

Beginning today, Tuesday, March 24, the EMU Athletic Media Relations office is reaching into "the vault," and pulling out some of the most memorable moments in EMU athletics history. Every Tuesday and Thursday for the next few weeks, fans can tune-in to Twitter and Facebook to relive a memorable moment, and can watch the full-length event on YouTube.

Of note, these events will be from Eagle All-Access or coaches video rather than ESPN, CBS or Big Ten Network originated broadcasts to not infringe on rights fees.

EMU Football Becomes Bowl Eligible with Historic Come-From-Behind Victory Over Ball State
The Eastern Michigan University football team overcame a 21-point first quarter deficit to defeat Ball State University, 48-41, Tuesday night at Schuemann Stadium to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1995. The 21-point comeback tied the largest deficit overcome by an Eagles team in program history.

Hayes Jones Wins the Gold
EMU alum Hayes Jones, one of the best track athletes to ever come through the school, highlighted his career with an Olympic Gold Medal in the 1964 Tokyo games. Take a look at the footage and hear the legend discuss his accomplishment in today's Video Vault!

Charlie Batch Football Highlights-Vol. 2
One of the best to ever don the Green and White, Batch enjoyed an outstanding career as the quarterback on the EMU football team and went on to have an NFL career that spanned more than a decade. Take a look back at some of the plays that helped Batch become a household name in Southeast Michigan.

The Eastern Michigan University football team (5-7, 3-5 MAC) finished out its home slate with a 34-31 win over Bowling Green State University (2-10, 2-6 MAC) on Senior Night, Tuesday, Nov. 21, at "The Factory" inside Rynearson Stadium. With their fifth victory of the season, the Eagles totaled 12 wins over the course of two seasons to notch the best two-year stretch since winning 13 from 1988-89.

Washtenaw County Winners
It was a rematch of a 2011 WNIT postseason tournament game and the Eagles proved that the March 17 victory last year was no fluke as they posted a convincing 77-64 win over the University of Michigan here Sunday, Dec. 11, afternoon in a non-conference battle for Washtenaw County in the Convocation Center. Senior guard Tavelyn James broke the EMU women's career scoring record with a 38-point effort to give her 1,935 points. James passed former EMU guard Laurie Byrd (1978-82) who scored 1,899 in her illustrious Hall of Fame career.

George Gervin Jersey Retirement Ceremony

2010 Men's Indoor Track and Field Highlights/Results
After starting the second day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship in second place, Saturday, Feb. 27, the men of Eastern Michigan University rallied to claim its 13th Indoor Title in 15 years since the inception of the MAC Indoor Championship in 1996. The Eagles won nine of the 17 scored events, totaling 171 points, to secure the win.

Eastern Michigan Great Earl Boykins Highlight Video
Earl Boykins, a four-year letterman for the Eagles from 1994-98, and an honorable mention All-American as a senior, is one of the greatest players to ever don the Green and White. Boykins' No. 11 jersey, in fact, joined former men's greats George GervinGrant Long and Kennedy McIntosh along with women's standout Laurie Byrd as the only basketball players to have their jerseys retired, in 2011. He left EMU as the second-leading scorer in history with 2,211 points went on to have a 13-year professional career, a majority of which was spent in the NBA.

The Eastern Michigan University baseball team completed the weekend series win over Oklahoma State University with a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2018, at Reynolds Stadium. It was EMU's (5-10) first series win on the young season.

Women's Basketball Captures 2004 MAC Tournament Crown
The 2003-04 season was truly special as the Eagles cruised to 22-8 overall record, including 12-4 in conference games. After a stellar regular season, Eastern was outstanding in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, going all-the-way to win its first ever MAC Tournament title and berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Eastern Michigan became the only school since 1955 to knock Duke out of the first round of the NCAA tournament.
   Earl Boykins, who racked up 23 points, five assists and four steals, thrilled a crowd of 31,373 with his jitterbug-like moves and flashy ball handling. Tied at 26 at halftime, Eastern's 49 second half points turned the game into a rout. Brian Tolbert scored 20 and Derrick Dial added 12. Click here to watch the game.
   EMU's season ended with a loss to No. 1 Connecticut, but not before Tolbert scored a tournament-high 39 points.

Men's Basketball Downs Purdue in 2012 Thriller
It might be the ugliest win in school history, but any win over a visiting Big Ten school is beautiful. Purdue out-rebounded the Eagles, 51-33, who shot just 31 percent for the field and 42 percent from the free throw line. An 24-8 EMU run gave the Eagles a 37-28 lead with 11:16 to play, and despite only scoring three points in the final 8:24 — all free throws — Eastern's 2-3 zone defense limited the Boilermakers to 14 field goals and 18 turnovers for the game.

The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was not ready to end its season and the Eagles came up with an outstanding effort on both ends of the court to post a thrilling 67-59 win over the University of Michigan, March 17, 2011, in the Convocation Center. The Eagles won the battle of Washtenaw County by holding the visitors to just 38.7 percent from the field, hitting just 24-of-62 attempts, forcing 19 turnovers, making 25-of-63 field goals for 39.7 percent while also making 8-of-21 three-point attempts for 38.1 percent.

2004 EMU Football Highlight Video
Take a look at the most memorable moments from the 2004 football season as the Eagles squared off with opponents from around the country and Mid-American Conference. Season highlights included wins over both in-state rivals, including an incredible 61-58, 4OT victory over Central Michigan.

Men's Basketball Upends No. 21 Michigan, 89-83, Dec. 10, 1997
Just four days after Michigan defeated No. 1 Duke, EMU authored a victory that headlined college basketball across the country. The Eagles at one point led by 13 in the second half, but found themselves behind, 82-79, with 2:21 in overtime but stormed back on a 3-pointer and a baseline lay-up from Jon Zajac (11 points), before Earl Boykins iced the victory with three free throws. EMU tied the Crisler Arena record for 3-pointers by an opponent with 12. Boykins had 29, Head added 20 and Dial had 16.

2012 MAC Women's Basketball Championship Game vs. Central Michigan
The series begins with a trip back to 2012. One season after falling to Bowling Green State University in the MAC tournament's championship game, the EMU women's basketball game got sweet revenge. Down one, 71-70, with under 10 seconds on the clock, Eastern scored at the buzzer to defeat Central Michigan University, 72-71, and earn its second-ever bid the NCAA tournament.
