EMU was bested, 7-0, by the Hoosiers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – After consecutive victories to begin the weekend, Friday, Feb. 7, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team was back on the court to close out its three-day Hoosier State-tour with a non-conference match against Indiana University, Feb. 9.
Redshirt sophomore Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) provided the team's most competitive singles match, as she battled IU's No. 5 singles player, Rose Hu, to a 6-3,6-3 final tally. Although Regalado did not earn the win, Head Coach Jayson Wiseman is encouraged by the effort.
"We did get a strong match from Natalia at No. 5 singles today, especially when considering that this outing was just her second appearance in the singles lineup this season," offered Wiseman. "Her effort certainly shows us (coaching staff) what she is capable of, and should bode well for the rest of the season."
First-year Eagle Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) also showed improvement on the court, as she took four games off of the Hoosiers' No. 3, Alexandra Staiculesc, in their matchup.
Popma and teammate, junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Algappa Marticulation School), joined together for doubles action, where the pair competed in a high intensity match with Indiana. Although the duo eventually fell, it successfully claimed four games from its Big Ten-foe (6-4).
Regarding the team's overall performance, Wiseman added, "We did a good job early of matching their (IU) intensity, especially in doubles, but ultimately, Indiana handled the high-pressure points better than we did."
Wiseman and the rest of the Eagles will enjoy a 10-day break before resuming competition in the form of an East Coast road trip, beginning with a match against Binghamton University Thursday, Feb. 20, from Vestal, N.Y.
