YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite battling back from 20-points down to get within 10, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell at home in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional contest against Ohio University, 75-65, tonight, Feb. 5.
The Eagles (10-11; 5-5 MAC) were without their top two scorers, freshman Aaliyah Stanley (Boynton Beach, Fla.-Oxbridge Academy), who averages 12.4 points per game, and redshirt junior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)), who paces the team with 18.1 points per contest. EMU also missed its leader in rebounds, junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) in the loss to Ohio (14-7; 7-3 MAC).
Sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) led the way for the Eagles with 17 points and 10 rebounds, dishing out five assists in the process. The New York-native's execution on the court earned the second-year standout her first career double-double. Redshirt sophomore Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wa.-Garfield) tallied 10 points, three steals, and two assists in her second double-digit scoring outing of the season, while junior Courtnie Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) tied her career-high with three assists, while dropping 13 points on the night. Redshirt sophomore RayJon Harris (Euclid, Ohio.-Euclid) stepped up to tally 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, both new career-highs for the Ohio product.
The Green and White failed to find a rhythm in the first quarter, making just five shots and going 1-of-7 from deep. Despite this, the Eagles exhibited steely play as Harris soared through the air for an offensive rebound for a score and Annechiarico drew a physical charge. EMU shot more efficiently than their MAC counterpart in the second quarter but still found themselves trailing, 38-28, at the half.
The Eagles found themselves down, 55-35, late in the third periof. Annecchiarico helped deplete Ohio's cushion, knocking down two late free-throws followed by a three-pointer. EMU refused to yield, sinking five of its last six shots, including a three-pointer as time expired to bring the game to within reach.
The Eagles came out strong in the fourth, outscoring the Bobcats through the first six minutes. Lewis and Annecchiarico both nailed a three-ball to keep the game competitive. Harris was unrelenting in the game's final quart-of-action, obtaining six points and one rebound. Despite its best efforts, the Green and White could not fulfill the comeback, falling 75-65, in the end.
Next up, the Eagles head west to take on the Western Michigan University Broncos. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Kalamazoo.
