Rowing Concludes Training Trip with Races Against Alabama, Southern Methodist
2/29/2020 6:09:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The Eagles saw significant improvements in times from last year's event
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – Following a week-long training trip to the Heart of Dixie, the Eastern Michigan University rowing team began its spring racing slate against the University of Alabama and Southern Methodist University with three top-three finishes today, Feb. 29.
"We had a really good week of training in Alabama," said Head Coach Kemp Savage. "We covered a lot of miles and did a lot of selection work throughout the week, so we were definitely a little fatigued heading into racing. Despite that fact, we saw massive improvements in the gaps between ourselves and Alabama. We're excited to get back on the water at home and train for our next race."
The 1V8+ boat posted the fastest time of the day at 7:43.3, a difference of 23.8 seconds to the winner, Alabama. The difference was 15 seconds faster than the 1V8+ results between EMU and Alabama at last season's race (38.83).
In addition, the 2V8+ finished with a time of 8:11.1, a difference of 39.1 seconds to top-finisher Alabama. Once again seeing a significant decrease in the finishing time difference, the 2019 2V8+ boat finished with a 1:12.29 deficit to the winner.
In the 1V4+ race, EMU clocked in at 9:11.6, a 47.3-second difference from the top boat. Another welcomed reduction, last season's boat finished with a 1:05.63 difference between the Eagles and Crimson Tide.
Eastern Michigan will resume racing Saturday, April 4th at the Cooper Invitational hosted by Bucknell University. The start time and more event details will be available on EMUEagles.com closer to the event date.
