EMU scored four runs in the eighth inning but could not complete the comeback
Eastern (1-7) has now dropped seven consecutive contests after winning its season-opening game, Feb. 15. The Eagles have been outscored, 53-29, in that stretch. Meanwhile, North Dakota State (3-6) has climbed back to just three games under .500.
Despite a slow offensive start, four Eagles finished the contest with multiple-hit performances. Senior captain Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), juniors Daniel Warkentin (Leamington, Ontario-Leamington District (Parkland)) and Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), and redshirt sophomore Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) each tallied two hits for the Green and White. Gora and Nate Jones led the way with two RBIs apiece.
Freshman Tyler Helgeson (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) and senior John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline) offered the best performances on the bump for the Eagles, as the pair combined to toss 3.1 innings of two-hit, no run baseball. The appearance was the first of the young campaign for Holt.
After scoring just three runs through the first seven frames of the game and falling behind, 12-3, the Eastern offense found new energy in the eighth. After a one-out walk put a runner at first base, senior Devin Hager (Commerce Twp., Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) knocked his first hit of the season to put runners on the corners. Redshirt sophomore Stephen Karis (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) used the next at-bat to produce an RBI-sac fly. From there, the Eagles got three consecutive hits off the bats of redshirt junior Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Gora, and Nate Jones, making the score 12-7 at the conclusion of the frame. The hit was the first of the season for Monahan.
Riding its newfound momentum into the ninth inning, Eastern loaded the bases with just one out in the ninth, but ultimately hit into a game-ending double play and giving NDSU the win, 12-7.
Eastern is back on the diamond for a pair of games against Villanova, and Northeastern, tomorrow, Feb. 29. Game one is set for 11 a.m., with game two set to follow at 3 p.m. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU baseball, visit EMUEagles.com and continue to follow @EMU_Baseball on social media.
