The Eagles surrendered a ninth-inning walk which gave FGSU the win
FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite taking a one-run lead, 2-1, in the sixth inning, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team was unable to earn a victory as it fell at the hands of Florida Gulf Coast University, 3-2, tonight, Feb. 25, at Swanson Stadium.
Eastern (1-6) hit .333 (2-for-6) with runners in scoring position, but left seven men on base as it struggled to score. After getting its lead-off batter on base and failing to score in four innings, Florida Gulf Coast (2-6) was able to turn the tide in the final two innings as it scored a run in each frame to complete a late-game comeback for the win.
The Eagles were led offensively by junior college transfer Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moller (Lincoln Trail)), who registered a pair of RBIs on two hits. He was the only Eagle to record a multi-hit game, and was one of just four team members to knock a hit in the contest.
Despite its struggles offensively, the EMU pitching staff was impressive. Junior Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) got his first start of the season and went four innings strong, allowing just two hits and one earned run, while striking out four. Freshman Cameron Wagoner (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) came on in relief and kept FGCU off the board for three consecutive innings. Wagoner's mid-90's fastball and high arching off-speed fooled FGCU batters through the entirety of his outing. In all, the EMU pitching staff allowed just seven hits, the lowest of any game this season.
After falling behind, 1-0, in the second inning, EMU was able to respond in the top half of the fourth frame. After a two-out walk and hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second base, respectively, it was Bault that notched the first of two RBI-singles to put EMU on the board. He poked a line drive into left field to give Eastern its first run of the game.
Bault came through again for the Green and White in his next at-bat, in the sixth inning. With Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) on second base via a single and an advancement, Bault went up-the-middle, allowing Jones to score and giving EMU the lead, 2-1.
Although it was dominated by the EMU hurlers through the first seven frames of the game, Florida Gulf Coast was able to take advantage of a EMU throwing error and notch a timely hit to tie the game, 2-2, in the eighth. FGCU drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to claim the win.
EMU is back on the diamond Friday, Feb. 28 as it begins the first of four games in the 2020 Snowbird Classic with a single contest against Saint Louis University. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. from Port Charlotte, Fla.
