Eagles Fall to Falcons, 71-64

Ce'Nara Skanes recorded her second double-double of the season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team dropped its first Mid-American Conference matchup of the 2020-21 season tonight, Dec. 11, to Bowling Green State University, 71-64, at the Stroh Center.

Despite the setback, Eastern Michigan (3-2, 1-1 MAC) matched its best five-game start under Head Coach Fred Castro, matching the 3-2 start of the 2018-19 squad.

On the court, the Eagles were led by redshirt sophomore Ce'Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Florida International)), who recorded her second double-double of the season with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance. Meanwhile, redshirt senior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) led EMU in points (17), steals (4), and assists (3). Eastern won the rebounding battle, 47-37, including 18 offensive rebounds. The 47 total match EMU's season-high, while the 18 set a new season-high total for the Eagles.

The Eagles and Falcons (4-0, 1-0 MAC) traded points to start the game, with EMU finding the back of the net first on two made free throws by Skanes. Eastern built its lead to eight points, 16-8, on a three-pointer by Combs and layups from Skanes and junior Kylee O'Hara (Ajax, Ontario-Henry Street (Florida International)). Bowling Green then shifted the tides in the final four minutes of the period, embarking on a 13-0 run to close quarter and lead, 21-16. Skanes finished the first 10 minutes of play with a perfect 4-of-4 mark from the free throw line and six total points, and a team-top four rebounds.

Momentum still favoring the Falcons to open the second half, the Eagles were able to muster just five points in the opening six minutes, all courtesy of Skanes, and BGSU was able to extend its lead to nine, 30-21 in that timeframe. With 2:52 left in the second, Combs found senior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) under the basket for a layup, beginning a 6-1 scoring run for EMU over the next 50 seconds. Combs once again found Hudson for a layup, while junior Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) added one of her own to bring the Eagles within four, 31-27. Each team added a basket with under 30 seconds remaining, and Bowling Green took a 33-29 lead into halftime.

EMU allowed just 12 points in the second quarter, BGSU's lowest second-quarter point total of the season.

Coming out of the break with a fighting spirit, it was Bowling Green that got on the board first, scoring the first points of the second half and expanding its lead to 38-31 over the first two minutes. The Eagles began to find rhythm again with 7:50 on the clock, holding the Falcons scoreless for the next near-five minutes and embarking on a scoring run of their own. A free throw and layup from redshirt junior Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wa.-Garfield), along with two-pointers from Hudson and Combs brought the game to a tie, 38-38, with just over three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the third. BGSU would break the tie and end its scoring drought with 2:51 on the clock, and the Eagles and Falcons traded buckets for the remainder of the third quarter and finished 30 minutes of play tied at 47-all.

EMU held BGSU to 14 points in the third period as it continued its stout defensive pressure. The 14-point total which ties the Falcons' season-low for points scored in the third.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the final period with a successful layup from Hudson, which gave the Green and White its first lead of the game since the first quarter, 49-47. Bowling Green responded with a three-pointer of their own to regain a lead it would never give back, coming away with the win, 71-64.

Eastern Michigan will return to action in just over one week, heading to Las Vegas, Nev. to take on Gonzaga University on Dec. 20.
