YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — If the fact that tomorrow begins the 51st season inside Rynearson Stadium was not enough to get the Eastern Michigan University football team hyped up, Head Coach Chris Creighton's team meeting speech tonight, Nov. 16, sure was.
A routine set of reminders and updates for the team quickly turned into a moment that junior wide receiver Tanner Knue (Mason, Ohio-Mason) will never forget, as Creighton informed him that he will officially become the newest scholarship player in the program.
"Tanner Knue embodies the qualities and characteristics that we want in our football program here at Eastern Michigan," said Creighton. "He walked on three years ago as a standout basketball player with only one year of high school football. After three years of good grades, representing this football program with class off the field, learning the game, developing his skill set, and competing all the time, he has developed into a starting wide receiver, leading us in receptions this year. It is with great pride and admiration that I can announce that Tanner Knue has earned a full scholarship!"
Knue is off to an incredible start during the 2020 season. The Mason, Ohio native burst onto the scene in EMU's week one matchup at Kent State, Nov. 4. His third-career appearance saw him record his first-career start, collect his first collegiate reception, and subsequently set career-bests in receptions (4), longest reception (19 yards), and reception yards (45). He more than doubled that performance against Ball State, Nov. 11, as he collected eight receptions and amassed 121 yards, both of which are career-highs. His 100-yard game is just the 128th in the 129-year history of the program.
A basketball star during his youth, it was not until his senior year in high school that Knue took to the gridiron. There, he caught 21 passes for 352 yards and five touchdowns, and averaged 17.2 yards per catch as the team posted a 9-3 record. Those numbers were good enough to catch the eyes of the EMU coaching staff, who went on to offer Knue a walk-on position with the team.
After two weeks on the road, the Eastern Michigan University football team kicks off the home portion of its 2020 schedule Wednesday, Nov. 18, against the University of Toledo. The game is set for 7 p.m. inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network with Rich Waltz providing the play-by-play and Aaron Murray serving as the analyst. WEMU (89.1 FM) will also air the game with Matt Shepard, Rob Rubick, and Tom Helmer on the call.
