YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Mid-American Conference released its updated 2020 football schedule Wednesday, Oct. 7. Eastern Michigan University will now kick off its six-game regular season Wednesday, Nov. 4, with a road game at Kent State University.
The MAC's 2020 football campaign of games had previously been postponed entirely by the league on Aug. 8 because of uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. A return to competition was announced by the MAC on Sept. 25.
Following the KSU game, Eastern will continue with Wednesday games at Ball State, Nov. 11, and at home against Toledo, Nov. 18. Eastern will close with three Saturday games against Central Michigan, Nov. 28, at Western Michigan, Dec. 5, and versus Northern Illinois, Dec. 12.
The regular season will conclude with the 25th MAC Football Championship game Friday, Dec. 18. This will mark the 18th MAC Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, Super Bowl XL, and the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four.
Additional announcements on television selections and game times will be announced at a later date.
No general public attendance or tailgating will be allowed at games. The participation of marching band, dance, cheer and spirit squads at football games will be guided by Conference protocols at institutional discretion consistent with public health guidance.
The MAC has established criteria relative to contest interruptions/cancellations, monitoring and reporting of test results as well as other COVID-19 regulations consistent with the NCAA resocialization guidelines. All football return to play is subject to national, state and local health guidelines.
EMU's Nov. 4 opener is the latest kickoff to a season in program history, breaking the previous mark set by the 1899 squad when it battled the Michigan Freshman to a 5-5 tie on Oct. 30.
Overall, this is the 129th year for the EMU football team. The first year of intercollegiate football in Ypsilanti was 1891, when the team, then known as the Michigan Normal College Normalites, posted a 0-2 record. EMU has fielded a team every year since 1891 with one exception, when the 1944 season was canceled because of World War II.
