YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team and Head Coach Eric Roof are excited to announce the signing of a 35th member to the Eagles' clubhouse for the upcoming season. Together, with Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious or chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams, the program welcomed Bentley "Bennie," Booth, a nine-year old from Belleville, Mich.
With his mom, Marguerita, and brother, Bradley standing by, Booth entered the Convocation Center media room to participate in a full-scale press conference and official signing. Nearly 50 guests, made up of EMU student-athletes, staff members, and local media, were in attendance to watch as the wide-smiling boy suffering from short bowel syndrome penned his name on his official "letter of intent."
Following the signing, the Eastern Michigan baseball team surrounded Booth and surprised him with a cookie-cake, as the event happened to take place on his birthday. With a new jersey on and a "script E," hat in place, the team showed Booth to the locker room, where a customized locker, new clothing, and a pair of official team shoes awaited his arrival.
The day concluded with a handful of activities and smiles in the team's locker room. Booth even bested coach Roof in a game of foosball, capping what will surely be an unforgettable day for all whom were involved.
