YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Andrew Wylie finds himself in a special situation.
The Kansas City Chiefs' starting offensive guard becomes only the ninth former Eastern Michigan University football player to take part in a Super Bowl. It is the dream of every kid who ever played pee-wee, high school, or college football to make it to the professional level. Even then, the Pro Football Hall of Fame is filled with elite players that have not been able to claim they have played in a game this big.
For Wylie, the reality of playing in a Super Bowl is a dream come true that many would not even accept as a Hollywood script.
Wylie was undrafted out of Eastern Michigan and bounced around four different teams before he finally found his home with the Chiefs. Wylie also had stints with the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns' practice squads to go along with his time with the Los Angeles Chargers and Chiefs.
The former EMU lineman signed with the Chiefs in December 2017 after being released by the Chargers practice squad. He was then signed to the Chiefs' active roster in January of 2018 and made his NFL debut in the following season.
Wylie made his first career start with KC against the Cincinnati Bengals and has started 21 of his 27 career NFL games.
The Midland, Mich. native started 11 games for Kansas City this season to helped them reach its first Super Bowl in 50 years. Unfortunately, Wylie has battled an ankle injury and has missed the Chiefs' last four games, including a 51-31 victory over Houston in the AFC Divisional round and a 35-24 win over Tennessee in the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs will take on San Francisco Sunday, Feb. 2, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Fla.
"We are so fired up for Andrew Wylie," said EMU Football Head Coach Chris Creighton. "He was a huge part of the senior class that led Eastern Michigan Football to our first breakthrough by going to the Bahamas Bowl in 2016. He went undrafted and bounced around the NFL his first season but persevered and now starts for the Super Bowl Bound Kansas City Chiefs. He is made up of all the right stuff and we couldn't be more proud of him. This Super Bowl will be extra special for sure."
At Eastern Michigan, Wylie was one of the anchors on the stellar EMU frontline as he earned 2016 Third Team All-MAC honors. He started all 13 games at right tackle, as the Eagles played in a postseason bowl for the first time in 29 years. He finished his career with 46 starts, which ranked fourth all-time at EMU, while his 47 appearances were tied for 12th all-time.
Wylie's 34-inch vertical at EMU's Pro Day would have ranked first for offensive linemen at the NFL Combine by two full inches. His 9-foot-7-inch broad jump would have tied for first, while his 4.5-second 20-yard shuttle would have ranked second.
Wylie's appearance in the Super Bowl will mark the 14th time a former EMU player will compete in the NFL's biggest game. He is the first since T. J. Lang (Green Bay) and Charlie Batch (Pittsburgh) played in Super Bowl XLV in 2011.
