AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team recorded five wins at Ocasek Natatorium this afternoon, but ultimately fell to Mid-American Conference foe Akron, 175-125, Jan. 18.
Senior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) and junior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) each picked up two wins for the Green and White, while junior Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) also found a spot at the top of the podium for Eastern.
Gavigan won both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events, and added both times to the program's all-time performance list. Her mark of 54.98 in the 100 back and 1:59.25 in the 200 back both rank seventh all-time for the respective events. In addition, the wins continue EMU's backstroke success. In the 11 times the 100 and 200 backstroke have been swam this season, an Eagle has found itself at the top of the podium each time, with Gavigan holding eight of those wins.
Sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for the second time this season, Berger took the top spot in the 1-meter event with a score of 288.23, and won 3-meter diving with a 304.20 mark.
Rounding out the wins for the Eagles was Shugarman, who claimed the 1,000 yard freestyle title in 10:13.69. Shugarman currently leads the MAC with the fastest times in both 1,000 yard (9:52.76) and 1,650 yard (16:27.88) freestyle events.
Eastern Michigan will return home to Jones Natatorium Friday, Jan. 24 to host MAC opponent Bowling Green. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
