The senior wide out's special teams heroics led Eastern to a 34-29 win, Sept. 21
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University football student-athlete Mathew Sexton (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced, today, Sept. 23. With Sexton's honor, EMU has had at least one player named a MAC West Player of the Week on offense, defense, or special teams in each week of the 2019 season.
Sexton made the game-winning play with a blocked punt and return of 30 yards for a touchdown in a 34-29 win over Central Connecticut State, Sept. 21.
With Eastern Michigan trailing 29-28 with 20 seconds left in regulation, the Clinton, Mich. native made the defining play as he broke through and blocked the punt, recovered the ball in stride and scored the game-winning touchdown for a 34-29 win with 10 seconds left in regulation.
Sexton was also responsible for Eastern Michigan's last blocked punt, which occurred during the 2018 Raycom Media Camellia Bowl against Georgia Southern on Dec. 15, 2018. Eastern Michigan has blocked six punts in six years under head coach Chris Creighton, with three of the blocked punts returned for touchdowns. This year, the Eagles rank first in the MAC, and fifth-nationally, in blocked punts.
The Eagles, now 3-1, will enjoy a bye week before opening Mid-American Conference play at rival Central Michigan, Oct. 5. EMU and CMU will clash on the gridiron for the 97th all-time meeting between the two programs, with the Chippewas holding the series lead, 60-30-6. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 3 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+. As always, fans can listen to the action on WEMU (89.1 FM) with Matt Shepard, Rob Rubick, and Tom Helmer on the call.
