Eagles Collect USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team collected United States Track and Field and Cross Country (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors for the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, the association announced Monday, July 22. Four Eagles' student-athletes earned recognition for their efforts on and off the track during the 2018-19 season.
Along with the four student-athletes who were placed on the All-Academic team, Eastern claimed the achievement as a team for the third straight year.
In order for a team to garner the distinction, it must carry a team grade point average of 3.0-or-better. A total of 336 NCAA Division I teams were honored by the USTFCCCA, 227 of which were women's programs.
Earning the individual honors for EMU were track and field alumni Sydney Meyers and Allyson Goff, as well as current senior Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) and junior Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central). Meyers and Goff were named to the All-Academic team for their performances during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, while Mason and Nelms were honored for their outdoor and indoor efforts, respectively. Meyers earn her second USTFCCCA honor, while the Eagles' four honorees is tied for the most in the Mid-American Conference.
One of the best to don the Green and White, Meyers closed out her Eagles' career holding the 10th-best outdoor 800m mark (2:09.74), the seventh-fastest outdoor 1500m time (4:21.23), and the program's third-best outdoor 5000m finish (16:08.63), while also recording the fourth-best indoor Mile (4:43.88), fifth-fastest indoor 3000m (9:19.23), and the third-best indoor 5000m mark (16:15.04). During her outdoor season, she earned the 5000m individual title at the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 23-25, while finishing fourth in the 1500m with a time of 4:30.24, cutting more than 10 seconds off her preliminary heat mark. She closed the outdoor campaign with a 16th-place finish in the 5000m at the NCAA East Regional Championships, May 23-25, crossing the finish line in 16:32.00.
The Zionsville, Ind. native had an equally impressive indoor season, competing in seven meets running the 800m, mile, 3000m, and 5000m events throughout the indoor campaign. Throughout the yearr, Meyers topped her career-best and third-best in EMU program history 5000m run at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 7, earning a first-place finish with a time of 16:15.04. She concluded the indoor season earning Second Team All-MAC honors for her efforts in the 3000m and leg of the Eagles' distance medley relay at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 22-23, collecting a total of four top-five individual finishes. Her mile time of 4:43.88 at the Meyo Invitational ranked 71st in the nation while her 3000m performance at the Iowa State Classic of 9:19.23 was the 50th-fastest mark by an NCAA athlete at the end of the 2018-19 regular season.
Goff made her mark in the EMU record books in her two years as an Eagle, finishing her career in the Green and White with the tied-for-eighth-best 60-meter hurdles (8.50), seventh-best indoor long jump (6.02m), and tied-for-fifth-fastest 100-meter hurdles (13.60) marks in program history. She ran in nine meets during her senior outdoor campaign, closing out the season with a 35th-place finish in the preliminary 100 hurdles round at the NCAA East Regionals, May 23-25 with a time of 13.77. At the MAC Outdoor Championships, she earned Second Team All-MAC honors with a silver medal in the 100 hurdles at the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 9-11, running to a career-best and NCAA East Regionals qualifying time of 13.60.
The indoor season saw Goff compete in seven meets for Eastern Michigan, including the MAC Championships, Feb. 22-23, where she recorded her career-best long jump effort of 6.02m, good for third place and seventh in EMU laurels. Her mark recorded at the conference title chase was the 76th-best in the NCAA at the end of the regular season.
Mason was an intricate member of the Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team that set the EMU school record at the NCAA East Regional Championships, May 23-25, crossing the finish line in 44.65. She also aided the same 4x100 relay squad that earned the conference championship and First Team All-MAC honors with a time of 45.04. Individually, she finished sixth overall in the 100m at the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 9-11, recording a time of 11.80, and registered her career-best 100m time at the Tennessee Relays, April 11, running to a time of 11.79w.
Nelms performed in six meets for the Eagles during the indoor season, including the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 22-23, where she took home a fourth-place finish in the 400m with a time of 54.34, the fifth-best effort in program history. She recorded six first-place finishes throughout the season, including two in the 200m and two in the 400m and was an essential member of the Eagles 4x400 relay team, assisting the Eagles at the Meyo Invitational, Feb.1-2, where the cohort ran the 1600m in 3:42.44, the eighth-best effort in EMU history. Her 400m performance at the conference championships ranked as the 79th-fastest time in the country at the end of the 2018-19 indoor season.
Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, an impressive total of 902 women earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors during the 2018-19 track and field season.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, each student athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of two athletic standards.
For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the top 96 nationally in an individual event, or ranked in the national top 48 in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships, which includes preliminary rounds.
