The Eagles are one of four teams nationally to earn the honor for 15-or-more years
LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – For the 15th consecutive season, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball program was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence with the AVCA Team Academic Award, the organization announced today, July 22. The Green and White ended the 2018-19 academic year with a career cumulative grade-point average of 3.31.
Overall, the honor marks the 19th time in the program's history that EMU has earned the award, and makes it one of four teams nationally to earn the honor for 15-or-more consecutive years. In addition, the Eagles were one of just 22 programs across Division I to achieve their Dig Pink® fundraising goals through the Side-Out Foundation.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while more than doubling the total over the last eight academic years. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 1,125.
Additionally, schools that reached their Dig Pink® fundraising goals through the Side-Out Foundation will continue to be honored. Dig Pink® is a nationwide movement to provide meaningful and impactful experiences for athletes while inspiring and empowering them to come together in support of the stage IV breast cancer community. Each year, hundreds of teams across the country (and some overseas) participate in the Dig Pink® Rally.
