EMU Student-Athletes Excelled Academically in 2018-19

A total of 77 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA during the academic year

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Coupled with three Mid-American Conference team titles and 15 individual MAC championships, the 2018-19 campaign was one of the most successful seasons in Eastern Michigan history. In the classroom, EMU student-athletes posted a cumulative 3.270 grade point average (GPA) during the winter semester, the highest mark on record. It was the 19th term in a row EMU student-athletes have earned over a 3.0 GPA.

Other highlights of the year included:

•  For MAC honors, EMU racked up 128 Academic All-MAC awards, fifth-most in the league.

• Finished the winter semester with the highest cumulative GPA in school history and the third-highest of any semester

• Of the 435 student-athletes enrolled at EMU in the fall, 299 student-athletes (69%) posted a 3.0-or-higher GPA for the term. Furthermore, a total of 309 student-athletes (71%) hold a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

• 16 teams posted a GPA of 3.0-or-higher (88%) in the Winter 2019 semester, and 16 teams had a 3.0-or-higher cumulative GPA (88%)

• Women's golf posted the second-best semester GPA in EMU Athletics history with a 3.770, bettered only by a 3.792 GPA by the women's tennis team in Winter 2006.

• Football also set program records for both semester and cumulative GPAs, having raised its overall cumulative GPA in 19 of its last 23 terms.  For the first-time in program history, the team earned a term GPA above a 3.00.

• An additional 24 student-athletes earned MAC Distinguished Scholar Student-Athletes accolades.

• A total of eight EMU standouts were selected for the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete Award.

• On the national stage, volleyball and women's golf received NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards. This was the seventh-straight year that volleyball has been honored, while it marks the third-time in the last four seasons for women's golf.

• The volleyball team posted a perfect 1000 multi-year APR rate for the seventh consecutive year.

• The women's golf team posted a perfect 1000 multi-year APR rate for the third time in team's history.

• The women's swimming and diving program earned College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American Team honors.

• Five student-athletes, representing four different sports, collected Google Cloud Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

• Six football players were named to the 2019 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, recognized for maintaining a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career.

• Soccer's Kristin Nason was named a Google Cloud Academic All-American® by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Nason earned Third Team honors.

• The student-athlete academic success was led by a total of 31 student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2019 winter semester. This followed 46 student-athletes collecting the honor in the 2018 fall semester.
