EMU produces draft pick for the third consecutive season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University junior infielder Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) was selected in the 33rd round, 981st overall, by the Miami Marlins in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday afternoon, June 5. Owings becomes the 76th EMU player to be drafted all-time into the MLB, and becomes the third selection from EMU in as many years, joining 2017 Seattle Mariners pick Sam Delaplane, and 2018 Oakland Athletics selection Max Schuemann.
Owings is the second Eastern player to be drafted into the Marlins organization, joining Steve Weber.
Owings was EMU's best offensive weapon in 2019, as he led the team in batting (.345), slugging (.527), on-base percentage (.395), stolen bases (14), runs (38), and doubles (18), as well as hits (76) and RBIs (34). The infielder also tied for the team lead in triples (five), and ranked second in home runs (four). Owings piloted the team with 26 multi-hit games, and paced the EMU lineup with seven multi-RBI games. Additionally, Owings added a 23-game reached base streak to go along with his team-best 14 game hitting streak.
Within the Mid-American Conference's regular season, Owings ranked fourth in hits, sixth in total bases, ninth in batting average, 10th in slugging percentage, and tied for fourth in both doubles and triples, respectively. The junior is no stranger on the national stage either, as he ranked inside the top-30 in triples, and inside the top-60 in hits and doubles.
In the field, Owings was outstanding, defending the hot corner at a near-perfect .974 clip. In all, the third baseman made just five errors in nearly 200 opportunities. The anchor of the fourth most efficient fielding unit in the MAC, Owings closed the season without making an error in his last 25 games played.
In addition to his top-tier statistics, Owings has compiled an impressive list of awards in 2019. The infielder was twice named the MAC's Scholar Athlete of the Week, recognized by College Sports Madness as the league's player of the week, named Eastern Michigan University Credit Union's Athlete of the Week, and was named a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American for the second straight year. Most recently, the junior was tabbed as one of league's best for the second straight year, as he was named Second Team All-MAC, and to the All-MAC Defensive Team.
Owings closed his third season at EMU having played in 157 contests, including making 146 starts. The lefty has knocked 187 hits, including 34 doubles, seven triples, and 10 home runs, on his way to batting .325, good for 15th all-time at Eastern.
