2019 marks the second consecutive year Owings has earned the award

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University baseball student-athlete Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) was named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Baseball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Thursday, May 9. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

2019 is the second consecutive season that Owings has earned the award, doing so one year ago, along with then-teammate Luke DeVenney. This season, Owings is one of four honorees in CoSIDA's District Five that stem from the Mid-American Conference, joining Kent State University's Kian O'Brien and Ben Carew, along with Miami University's Kyle Winkler.

Owings is in the midst of his best season as an Eagle. In his 48 starts for the Green and White in 2019, the junior is hitting at a career-best .344 clip, racking up 67 hits and 29 RBIs along the way. Along with his .528 slugging percentage and .396 on-base percentage, Owings has been solid in Eastern's defensive efforts, playing primarily third base and compiling a .971 fielding percentage.

The returning First Team All-MAC selection is among the league and nation's best in many categories this year, ranking inside the MAC's top-ten in batting average, slugging percentage, hits, doubles, and triples. On the national scale, Owings ranks  20th with a career-best five three-baggers this season.

To be eligible for Academic All-District® consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have reached sophomore standing. The 12th selection for the award in EMU Baseball history, Owings now advances to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with first, second, and third-team Academic All-America® honorees to be announced in June.

Owings and the rest of the Eagles baseball team return to action tomorrow, May 10, for the opening game of a three-game set against MAC-foe Central Michigan University. First pitch against the Chippewas is set for 6 p.m.
