JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) - Eight members of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team travel to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. to compete at the NCAA East Regionals Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25.
The eight student-athletes competing to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8, are seniors Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community), Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell), and redshirt senior Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern (Georgia State)), juniors Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)), and redshirt junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School), as well as freshman Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer). Sophomore Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) will travel with the squad and act as an alternate for the 4x100-meter relay. In order to qualify for the NCAA East Regional, an individual must be among the top-48 declared student-athletes in their respective events, while for each relay event, a relay team must be one of the top-24 declared teams in the region in order to compete at the regional championships.
Meyers is the lone Eagle with experience competing at the outdoor championship-qualifying event, returning to the event for the third straight season and competing in the 5000m. She enters the competition as the 21st seed with a qualifying mark of 16:08.93, set at the Bryan Clay Invitational, April 17. The Zionsville, Ind. product's most recent efforts in the 5000m earned her an individual Mid-American Conference Championship, racing to a time of 16:45.28 in Muncie, Ind., May 11.
The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay squad of Mason, Johnston, Ganther, and Harris look to use the momentum from its recent MAC Championship effort to propel them to success. The cohort enters as the 20th seed at the regional qualifier, after recording a gold-medal time of 45.04 in Muncie, Ind. The effort is the third-best time ever run by a squad wearing the Green and White and sits just .05 seconds off the program record time set by Harris, Johnson, Mason, and former Eagle Jasmine Jones in 2018. Two of EMU's other representatives on the track include members of the relay squad, as Harris competes in the 100m, entering with a seed time of 11.56, while Johnston hits the oval in the 400m with a qualifying time of 53.55.
Smith runs the 3000m steeplechase on Friday night, holding the 21st-best time in the region at 10:20.94. Representing the Green and White in the hurdles events are Goff and Cernej-Garcia, competing in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Goff comes fresh off a silver-medal performance at the league championships, clearing the obstacles in 13.60 for the 45th-best mark in the East Region. Cernej-Garcia enters the competition after an EMU top-10 effort in Muncie, Ind., notching a time of 60.00 at the MAC Championships, May 11, which acts as the seventh-best effort in program history and earns her the 46th seed at the regional championship event.
The top-12 qualifiers in each event will head to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, to determine the national champion. Events on the track are split into two separate rounds, eliminating half the field after Thursday and Friday's first-round heats. The top-24 runners in each event determined by the first-round heats will compete in the quarterfinals, held on both Friday and Saturday, deciding the top-12 qualifiers for the national championship competition.
Cernej-Garcia is first up to compete for the Eagles, hitting the track at 4:30 p.m. for the 400-meter hurdles first round. Harris follows at 6:30 p.m with the 100m qualifying heats, with Johnston starting shortly after at 7:20 p.m. in the 400m. EMU's only guaranteed performances on Friday are Goff's 100-meter hurdles first round effort at 4:30 p.m. and Smith's 3000m steeplechase race, scheduled to begin at 8:20 p.m. If Johnston, Harris, and Cernej-Garica qualify for the quarterfinals, they will run at 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively. The 4x100-meter relay gets its chance to qualify for the national championships at 6 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Meyers' 5000m race at 8:05 p.m. Based on Friday's performance, Goff could race in the 100-meter hurdles quarterfinals, scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
