EMU leads the conference with 25 student-athletes receiving recognition
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team had 25 student-athletes earn Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors, the league office announced Friday, April 5. EMU's 25 student-athletes awarded the recognition is the most by any team in the MAC for the 2018-19 campaign.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
The Eagles receiving the honor were: sophomores Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este), Hunter Ignasiak (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), Carlee Jones (Edgewood, K.Y.-Notre Dame Academy), Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor), Kaitlynd Scanlan (Waukesha, Wis.-Pewaukee), Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green), Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany), Ali Staver (Betterndorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley), and Avrie Stewart (Menominee, Mich.-Menominee), juniors Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline), Marcella Da Costa (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil- Colégio Dom Bosco), Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.- Ward Melville), Brielle Johnston (Ottowa, Ontario-Catholqiue Franco-Quest), Rachel Stark (Avon, Ohio-Avon), Kylie Sutherlin (Fischers, Ind.-Hamilton Southeastern), Sydney Thomas (Jamestown, N.Y.-Southwestern Senior), Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo), and Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South), and seniors Emilie Desnoyers (St. Albert, Alberta), Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.-Hamilton), Gabrielle Mace (Clinton, Mich.-Chippewa Valley), Marissa Marion (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), and Dora Vrcic (Dubrovacka, Split, Croatia).
EMU comes off another terrific season in the pool, earning a runner-up finish at the MAC Championships, Feb. 27- March 2. Duncan swept both breaststroke event individual championships, earning a nod as the conference's Most Outstanding Senior and the championship meet's Most Outstanding Swimmer. Swartz took home the conference individual event title in the 1650 Freestyle to wrap up her career as one of the best distance swimmers in conference history. Meanwhile, the Green and White finished its slate of conference competition with a perfect 3-0 mark, recording a 7-0 record in duals for just the fourth time in program history, while extending its league dual meet win streak to 17 consecutive meets.
"Being successful academically is team value that these women have completely embraced while excelling athletically," Head Swimming Coach Peter Linn noted. "We are extremely proud of their achievements in both arenas."
