INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf and volleyball teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards Wednesday, May 1, for their exceptional work in the classroom as part of the NCAA's Academic Performance Program. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. This is the seventh straight year that volleyball has been honored, while it marks the third-time in the last four seasons for women's golf.

The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates (APR). The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 1,214 teams.

"Our coaches and student-athlete support staff have created a culture where academic excellence is expected," said Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee said. "We are grateful to work with student-athletes who are not only gifted in their sport, but academically focused and motivated."

The 1,328 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 857 women's teams and 471 men's or mixed squads.

"Congratulations to the programs earning Public Recognition Awards for their commitment to academic success," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "The number of perfect scores this year is an indication that schools and student-athletes are setting high bars for achievement, and we are proud that they are continuing to succeed academically as well as athletically."

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18  academic years.

A perfect score (or graduation rate) is represented by 1,000, while a 930 (50 percent rate) marks the threshold for which the NCAA can impose sanctions on athletic programs. Full APRs for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released May 8.

A total of 90 Division I programs received public recognition in women's volleyball, including EMU, Miami, and Northern Illinois from the Mid-American Conference. Eastern joined Akron, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Kent State, Ohio, and Toledo as the league's women's golf recipients.

The MAC had a total of 38 programs recognized Wednesday, while a total of 23 Division I athletic teams from the state of Michigan earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA.

In the 14 years since APR Public Recognition Awards have been handed out, Eastern Michigan has been honored 23 times in nine different sports.
