Meyers and Clarke Highlight Eagles’ Efforts at Jesse Owens Classic

Meyers finished third in the 1500m while Clarke recorded the fourth-best hammer throw in program history

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team senior captain Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) and sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica- Immaculate Conception) shined to start competition at the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by the Ohio State University Friday, April 26. Meyers earned the Eagles' top finish of the day while Clarke marked a top-10 performance in program history.
Meyers recorded a 1500m time of 4:28.88, good for third place. EMU's top finisher of the day bested runners from Ohio State and Mid-American Conference foe University of Akron en route to her podium finish. Redshirt junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) also ran in the 1500m, earning a mark of 4:48.79 for 23rd overall.
EMU's first day in Columbus also saw sophomore Clarke record a 14th-place hammer throw effort of 50.80m, her career best and the fourth-best throw seen by an athlete donning the Green and White. Clarke bested her previous top performance by .12m, set at the Spartan Invitational, April 5-6. The Kingston, Jamaica native holds the 12th-best clearance by a Mid-American Conference athlete this season.
In the Javelin, junior Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) recorded her season-best throw, clearing 39.86m for eighth overall. With her performance, Bourg continues to hold the eighth-best heave in the MAC in 2019. Finishing just three spots behind her was junior Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic), clearing 33.69m for an 11th-place finish.
EMU carries on competition at the Jesse Owens Classic Saturday, April 27, with events set to begin at 10:30 a.m. Live results for the classic will be available here, while frequent updates on the Eagles' performances will also be provided on the team's twitter page, @EMUWXC_TF.
