Sean A. McCarthy Named EMU’s Director of Compliance

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Sean A. McCarthy has been named the Director of Compliance at Eastern Michigan University, Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance Sean P. McCarthy announced today, April 24. McCarthy arrives in Ypsilanti after a nearly three-year stint at Texas Tech University, where he most recently served as the Associate Director of Compliance.
"We are thrilled to welcome Sean to EMU and our staff as the Director of Compliance," said McCarthy. "I have been lucky enough to consider him a close friend and colleague for the last five-plus years. He possesses a wealth of compliance experience at a diverse set of institutions and provides a positive impact our office immediately."
As a member of the compliance staff, McCarthy will be responsible for initial, continuing, and transfer eligibility, admissions, official and unofficial visits, camps and clinics, and other aspects of recruiting. He will also serve as the primary contact for the sports of: men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, women's soccer, and baseball.
"I am excited to accept the Director of Compliance position at Eastern Michigan," said McCarthy. "I'm looking forward to getting started in this new role and building on the positive environment within the EMU Athletic Department."
McCarthy joined Texas Tech in June of 2016 as an athletics compliance coordinator. His duties with the Red Raiders included educating the coaching staff on the rules and regulations in the NCAA manual, as well as monitoring student-athlete time management for practice and playing seasons.
During the 2015-16 academic year, McCarthy worked in the compliance/student services department at Villanova University, when the Wildcats won the NCAA men's basketball championship. While at Villanova, he was selected to attend and was interviewed at the Emerging Leaders Seminar at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.
McCarthy also served as the compliance intern at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2014-15. In that role he created initial eligibility assessments for incoming student-athletes while collaborating with coaches on phone and recruiting logs.
A native of Brainerd, Minn., McCarthy has also worked as a game day public relations assistant for the National Football Leagues's Minnesota Vikings and the National Lacrosse League's Minnesota Swarm. He also worked as a intern and rules official for the Metro Baseball League.
McCarthy earned his bachelors degree in Sport Management from the University of Minnesota in 2012, while adding his Juris Doctor from the Marquette University Law School in 2015.
