Late Miscues Doom Baseball in Loss to Dayton

Tyler Koons sets career-highs with five strikeouts in five shutout innings

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to the University of Dayton Tuesday, April 16, at Oestrike Stadium.

With the score knotted at one heading into the top of the ninth, redshirt junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) retired the first two batters he faced, but the Flyers (20-16-1, 8-4 A-10) broke through for three unearned runs to split the season series against the Eagles (8-28-1, 3-9 MAC).

Redshirt sophomore Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) extended his hitting streak to 10 games, finishing 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a pair of singles, and a stolen base. Junior Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, while senior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), sophomore Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), and freshman Stephen Karis (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) each tallied a base hit.

Making his first career start at Oestrike Stadium, freshman Tyler Koons (Flat Rock, Mich.-Gibraltar Carlson) set career-highs with five strikeouts in five scoreless innings of work, surrendering four hits, two walks, and two hit batters as he ended up with a no-decision. Sophomore Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) tossed three innings in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks before Hester took the mound to begin the final frame.

After escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third, the Eagles nearly broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the same inning. Timko chopped a two-out single through the left side and promptly moved into scoring position with his seventh stolen base of the campaign. Peggs then sent a base hit into left, but the rally came to an end when Timko was thrown out trying to score on the play.

EMU would grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Timko started the home half of the inning by smashing a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left-center for his fourth home run of the season and first since a solo shot at TCU, March 16.

Dayton pulled even with a run in the top of the seventh. Freshman Bryce Hellgeth smacked a leadoff double into the right-center gap and eventually advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior Brantley Johnson also reached base with a walk, before redshirt sophomore Mitchell Garrity singled into center to plate Hellgeth.

Eastern Michigan heads to East Lansing for a midweek clash against Michigan State University Wednesday, April 17. First pitch inside McLane Baseball Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
