EMU had four athletes earn the honor for the second straight year

COLORADO SPRING, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) - The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) announced four Eastern Michigan University student-athletes earned the distinction of being a 2019 NSCA All-American Athlete Award recipient. The award recognized senior swimmer Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), junior baseball player Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), redshirt junior soccer player Kristin Hullibarger (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson), and sophomore men's basketball player Jalen King (Pasco, Wash.-Kings Academy).

Nominated by EMU Associate Sports Performance Coach Aaron Short and Assistant Sports Performance Coach Sean Conaty, the four athletes' determination to improve in athletics while maintaining academic prominence is a great model for all student-athletes at EMU.

"We are proud to have Aaron Short and Sean Conaty join the NSCA in its mission to safely improve athletic performance," said Coach Scott Caulfield, the NSCA's Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. "Supporting our student-athletes guarantees a stronger future for the NSCA."

The NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year program recognizes those collegiate and high school athletes whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. These athletes are also recognized for their academic and personal accomplishments and their integrity as student-athletes.

A two-time First Team All-American and two-time All-American Honorable Mention, Duncan concluded her career as one of the best to ever don the Green and White. A five-time Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week selection, Duncan is the only Eagle in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in four straight seasons. A four-time First Team All-MAC honoree, Duncan is a six-time MAC Champion. Weeks after being named the MAC's Most Outstanding Swimmer, as well as the league's Outstanding Senior, Duncan finished as the 100 breaststroke runner-up at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, March 21-23, the highest finish in program history.

Owings garners the honor for the second straight year. A First Team All-MAC selection a year ago, Owings has picked up right where he left off. Currently, the Saline, Mich. product leads the team with a .356 batting average, in addition to pacing the Eagles in runs (25), hits (48), triples (5), RBIs (23), stolen bases (9), and tying for the team-lead with three home runs. A two-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week selection, Owings is also ranked inside the MAC's top-10 in six categories including; at bats (first - 135), triples (second - 5), hits (third - 48), batting average (ninth - .356), slugging percentage (.556), and stolen bases (10th - 9).

Hullibarger earns the nod following a career year that saw the Brooklin, Ontario native named a CoSIDA Google Cloud Third Team Academic All-American, CoSIDA Google Cloud All-District, Second Team All-MAC, Academic All-MAC, and a MAC Distinguished Scholar. Hullibarger led the Eagles with 21 points, scoring a career-best eight goals and adding a career-high five assists. For her career, Hullibarger is slotted 14th in EMU laurels with 41 points, while ranking 11th with 17 career goals.

King set career-highs in nearly every statistical category in 2018-19, including points, rebounds, steals, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and minutes played. The Pasco, Wash. native grabbed a career-high four rebounds at Duke, Nov. 14, before scoring a career-best six points on 3-of-5 shooting against Central State, Dec. 8.
