EMU heads to Austin, San Marcos, and Stanford for a weekend of competition
AUSTIN, Texas (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team readies for a busy weekend of competition, sending student-athletes to compete at three events in Texas and California, March 28-30. The Eagles will compete at the Texas Relays, March 28-30, hosted by the University of Texas, the Bobcat Invitational, March 28-30, hosted by Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, and the Stanford Invitational, March 29, hosted by Stanford University in Stanford, Calif.
The Eagles come off a successful stint at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt University, March 22-23. Freshman Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) opened up her inaugural collegiate campaign with two top-20 efforts, placing 16th in the 200m with a time of 24.70 and earning seventh overall in the 400m with a time of 56.47. Her 400m performance not only marked a career-best outdoor time in the event but bested tracksters from MAC-foes Ball State University and Central Michigan University. Additionally, her performance was the top finish by a freshman in the event and ranks as the third-best effort by a conference athlete this season. In the field events, junior Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) earned the Green and White's top effort, with a Javelin Throw effort of 39.47m, good for sixth place. The Shorewood, Ill. native's throw is the second-best effort by a Mid-American Conference athlete in the 2019 campaign.
The weekend's meets begin Thursday, March 28, as sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) participates in the Discus Throw at the Bobcat Invitational, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m CT. The day continues at 4:30 p.m. CT as freshmen Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) and Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) compete in the 400m Hurdles preliminary heats at the Texas Relays.
Friday's efforts begin at 9:35 a.m. CT as senior Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell), juniors Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet) compete in the 4x100m preliminary rounds at the Texas Relay. Following the relay effort, redshirt senior Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and freshman Alysse Marie Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peters) will compete in the 100m Hurdles prelims and Harris and Mason will compete in the 100m qualifying heats. Rounding out the Eagles' day at the Relays is the 4x400m, where the squad of junior Johnston, freshmen Edwards and Cernej-Garcia, and sophomore Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) will compete for a chance at the championship heats.
Meanwhile, beginning at 1 p.m. CT, Clarke, Goff, and sophomore Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson) will compete at the Bobcat Invitational. Clarke will participate in the Hammer Throw, while Goff and Washington both will compete in the Long Jump.
2,000 miles away, senior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) and redshirt junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) will compete in the 5000m at the Stanford Invitational, with sectional heats beginning at 11:48 a.m. PT.
The Green and White begin their efforts on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT, as junior Bourg and Iverson compete in the Javelin Throw at the Bobcat Invitational. At 12 p.m. CT, Washington and Clarke will compete in San Marcos in the Triple Jump and Shot Put, respectively.
