FORT WORTH, Texas. (EMUEagles.com)
–Despite blanking their opponent in six of nine frames, the Eastern Michigan baseball team was unable to come away with a win against TCU in game one of its three-game set with the Horned Frogs, March 15.

EMU (3-14-1) played comeback after falling behind in the second inning, 3-0. The Eagles were unable to spark any offense, eventually trailing 10-0 before scoring their first runs in the eighth inning.

Within the defensive struggles, EMU's pitching staff built on its stellar performance against Dayton, March 12. After surrendering three early runs, the staff held TCU scoreless in its next four frames, keeping the Horned Frogs off the board until the seventh inning. Leading the way, and getting the start for Eastern, was sophomore left-hander Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard). After allowing his only runs of the game in the second inning, Granzotto showed tremendous poise and resolve, shutting down TCU in its next three opportunities. In all, Granzotto tossed five innings for the Green and White, giving up just three runs, while posting four shutout innings and fanning two.

Later in the contest, senior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas.-Carmel (Ind.)(Iowa Lakes C.C.)) impressed on the hill, hurling a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Sparks has been electric in 2019, striking out seven over 8.1 innings of work this season, while compiling a 2.17 ERA.

Offensively, EMU was unable to outpace TCU, scoring just two runs on three hits in the contest. Although down late, Eastern refused to give in, battling to score both its runs in the eighth inning. After two EMU batters drew walks to begin the inning, junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) poked a single to load the bases. Taking advantage of the scoring opportunity, senior captain John Rensel Jr (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), showed impressive patience, drawing an RBI walk to give the Eagles their first run. With one run in and the bases still loaded, sophomore Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) smacked an RBI single, allowing EMU to add its second run.

Despite establishing eighth inning momentum, Eastern was unable to score again, eventually falling, 12-2.

EMU is back on the field, tomorrow, March 16, for game two of its series with TCU. An evening game, first pitch will be thrown at 5 p.m. CT. Eastern's three-game weekend set at TCU will conclude Sunday, March 17, with a single game, set for 1 p.m.
