Tsafantakis Leads EMU On Day One of NCAA Zone Championships

Tsafantakis earned the Eagles' top finish of the day, placing 12th overall

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - Junior Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) paced the Eastern Michigan University women's diving team on day one of the NCAA Zone C Championships at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University, March 15. 

Tsafantakis was the only Eagle to qualify for the 3-meter finals, finishing with a 12th-place effort of 560.35. The Washington, Mich. native not only bested her 2018 finish by 22 places, but also topped divers from the Big 10's Northwestern University, Indiana University, and the University of Michigan, as well as the Southeastern Conference's (SEC) University of Kentucky and the Atlantic Coast Conference's (ACC) University of Notre Dame. 

Sophomore Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio- Glen Este) earned a spot in the top-40 with a 35th-place finish, earning a score of 238.75, while sophomore Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green) and senior Gabrielle Mace (Clinton, Mich.-Chippewa Valley) placed 41st and 44th with scores of 225.70 and 224.00, respectively.  

The Eagles continue competition at the championship event tomorrow, March 16, with the 1-meter dive. The day is set to begin at 1 p.m. and can be followed through live results here.
