Thompson knocks first career hit; Timko paces offense with stellar day

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (EMUEagles.com) - After suffering a two-game setback yesterday, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team again dropped both games of a doubleheader Sunday, March 10, at Marshall University. Despite striking first in game one, and keeping game two close throughout, Eastern was unable to cool the Marshall bats, dropping both games of the double-date. The two-game Sunday showdown saw the Eagles overwhelmed 25-3 in the morning battle, before falling in the afternoon finale, 10-3.

EMU (2-13-1) showed grit in each game, but would ultimately fall behind by a large margin in both contests, enabling Marshall to secure the sweep. In the early game, EMU led 1-0 midway through the first inning. Although establishing a lead, the Marshall offense erupted to score 25 runs, en route to a 25-3 victory over Eastern.

Although not nearly as lopsided, the situation was similar in game two. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, EMU quickly pushed two runs across the plate to take the 2-1 advantage. Marshall, tying the game, 2-2, in the third, would go on to outscore EMU eight-to-one in the final innings, to secure a 10-3 win over the Eagles.

GAME ONE:  Marshall 25, Eastern Michigan 3

Game one of Sunday's doubleheader saw the Eagles struggle at the plate, unable to keep pace with the Thundering Herd. Despite building an early lead, 1-0, for the third consecutive contest, Eastern was unable to rally enough offense, falling 25-3 in the game one setback.

Challenged by the heavy-hitting offense of Marshall, the EMU pitching staff struggled to string together outs in game one, giving up up 25 runs on 28 hits. Getting the nod for the Green and White was freshman Justin Meis (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bethel Park), who tossed 3.2 innings, striking out three in his 88 pitch effort. Despite allowing six earned runs, Meis was dialed in on the bump, as nearly 63 percent of his tosses went for strikes.

Although unable to keep up with the Marshall offense, EMU batters added multiple highlights to the game. Extending his reached-base streak to nine was redshirt sophomore Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice.), whose sixth inning double put an eventual EMU run on third. Following an RBI from junior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), freshman Josh Thompson (Springboro, Ohio-Springboro) delivered his first collegiate hit, a single to left field. Additionally, Sophomore Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) added an RBI sacrifice fly for EMU.

Despite its best effort, Eastern's defense was unable to slow Marshall, eventually falling 25-3.

GAME TWO:  Marshall 10, Eastern Michigan 3

The second game, Sunday's series finale, proved to be much more competitive than its morning counterpart. While Eastern, for the first time in the series, failed to take an initial lead, it quickly battled back to take a 2-1 advantage in the early going. With the lead in hand, Marshall, as it had all weekend, showed keen offensive resolve, as it would go on to score 10 runs in the game, handing Eastern a 10-3 setback in the series finale.

Overpowered by the Marshall bats, EMU gave up double digit hits in both Sunday contests. After allowing 28 hits in game one, the Thundering Herd would blister Eastern once more, adding 17 hits in game two. Despite the game two loss, Eastern showed significant poise, not letting Marshall go on extended runs as they did in game one. Tossing the first five frames for EMU was redshirt junior, right-hander Nick Porretto (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva (McHenry C.C.)), who would fan three Marshall batters, and allow just three runs in his first start for EMU. Porretto proved resilient, battling to keep Eastern within striking distance during his effort.

Offensively, the Eagles improved in the series finale. While only able to cross the plate three times, EMU tallied eight hits, and saw multiple Eagles complete multi-hit efforts. Leading the way, as he has for much of the season,  was redshirt sophomore Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice.) Timko, nearly perfect at the plate, went 3-for-4 during the contest, while also drawing a walk. Timko, after the series with Marshall, now ranks second for EMU, with a batting average of .410 on the season, and has reached base in his last ten games, dating back to Feb. 27 against Notre Dame. Leading the team in batting average is junior captain Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), whose 2-for-4, one RBI performance during game two bumped his season average to .423. Jones, who returned to the field after battling injury, for the first time since Feb. 17, during the Marshall series, finished the weekend going 5-for-12, with four RBI and a .500 slugging percentage. Junior  Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) also contributed to the EMU offense, knocking two hits in the series finale.

Upon returning to Ypsilanti, Eastern will travel to Dayton, Ohio for a single game date against the University of Dayton, Tuesday, March 12, at 3 p.m. From Dayton, Eastern heads to Fort Worth, Texas for a three-game weekend series with Texas Christian University, March 15-17, at Lupton Stadium. The series will commence Friday, March 15, with a single game set for 6:30 p.m. CT.  The series will close with single games on Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17, scheduled for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.  To stay up-to-date with all the action, make sure to follow on Twitter, @EMU_Baseball, and live stats, at EMUEagles.com.
