Meyers Marks Top-MAC 3000m Time at Iowa State Classic

AMES, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team sent four distance runners to compete at the Iowa State Classic, Friday, Feb. 8. Senior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) earned her personal-best 3000m time, placing seventh-overall, while recording the fifth-fastest time in program history.
Meyers' 3000m time of 9:19.23 not only topped her previous career-best by more than 10 seconds, but her effort also surpassed the top Mid-American Conference performance this season by more than nine seconds. The Zionsville, Ind. native now holds the 34th-best time in the NCAA during the 2018-19 campaign.
Also seeing success in Ames was redshirt junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School), whose career-best performance of 9:31.37 earned her third place in the 3000m unseeded event. Sophomore Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) finished in 30th with a time of 10:19.99.
Rounding out the day's efforts was sophomore Ashleigh Simonis (Capetown, South Africa-Milnerton), finishing in 17:30.69, good for a 33rd-place finish in a talented 5000m field.
The rest of the EMU squad competes tomorrow, Feb. 9, at the Kent State Doug Raymond National Qualifier. Competition is set to begin at 12 p.m. Live results for the meet are available by clicking here.
