Each week two Eagles will be honored for their success on the field

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Each week, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics names the EMUCU's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic media relations department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are women's track & field athlete, Michaela Nelms, and men's track & field athlete, Owen Day.

Week's Achievements: Sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) recorded two efforts that put her name in the Eastern Michigan record books at the prestigious Meyo Invitational, Feb. 1-2. Nelms ran the fourth-fastest 400m time by an athlete donning the Green and White, while also anchoring the Eagles' 4x400 Relay that recorded the eighth-fastest effort in program history. The Rocky Mount, N.C. native's 400m time of 54.40 not only was good for the lone Eagles' individual event win of the day, but also increased her grip of the top spot on the Mid-American Conference performance list for the event. Furthermore, she bested her own conference-best and career-best performance from just last weekend's by .12 seconds. Her efforts as EMU's anchor on the 4x400 relay earned the Eagles their second event title of the day, while also improving the Eagles' MAC-leading time in the event.

Week's Achievements: Eastern Michigan sophomore Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) concluded his time at the prestigious Meyo Invitational, Feb. 1-2, with a top-10 program mark in the mile run. Day's 4:01.25 effort earned him a second-place finish, while besting his previous time in the event by more than a second. Additionally, it moved the Ottawa, Ontario native to ninth in the EMU record book. His performance also registered as the fastest time by a Mid-American Conference student-athlete this season in the event.
