Eastern Michigan is back in action against Abilene Christian Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 6:30 p.m.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not break through offensively in a 4-0 loss to the University of Incarnate Word Sunday, Feb. 24, in EMU's final game of the Alamo Irish Classic.
Eastern (1-6-1) mustered just four hits off of UIW's pitching, spread among four players. Senior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) went 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his hit streak to five games, while senior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), junior Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community), and freshman Stephen Karis (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) tallied EMU's other base knocks.
On the mound, freshman Justin Meis (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bethel Park) went the first five innings, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs, while striking out two. Sophomore Luke McGuire (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Stevenson) tossed the final three frames, allowing three hits and walking two. The two combined to keep Incarnate Word's potent offense, which had been averaging nearly eight runs a game prior to Sunday's contest, to just four runs.
Incarnate Word scored one in the second to take the lead and never looked back. A leadoff single scooted into third on a base knock, before scoring on a fielder's choice. The Cardinals tacked one on in the fourth, and added two more in the seventh to top Eastern Michigan, 4-0.
The Green and White looks to bounce back Wednesday night, Feb. 27, when Eastern faces Abilene Christian University. First pitch is schedule for 6:30 p.m. CT.
