Zachary Owings finished the day 4-for-8 at the plate with three extra base hits
Game One: Eastern Michigan 3, Notre Dame 11
Eastern Michigan's offense remained steady tallying an eight-hit game against Notre Dame, with three Eagles picking up two-or-more hits. Senior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) turned in a solid showing at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and sophomore Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) also turned in multi-hit efforts. Owings continued his impressive start to the year, going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, and Easter added two hits on four at bats to go along with a run scored.
Sophomore Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) got the starting nod, going 5.0 innings and striking out five, while junior Remington Monce (Largo, Ind.-Northfield (Jackson College)) struck out two over the final two frames.
Notre Dame jumped out in front with a two-run first, but Eastern came back to tie it up with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Easter singled and came around to score on an Owings triple, before a ground out brought Owings in from third to level the score at 2-2.
The Fighting Irish reclaimed in the bottom of the frame as a leadoff single came around to score, giving Notre Dame a 3-2 lead. ND added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to top EMU, 11-3.
Game Two: Incarnate Word 8, Eastern Michigan 3
Owings' hot bat carried over into the night cap, as the Saline, Mich. native went 2-for-4 with a triple, while EMU registered seven hits as a whole. Senior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) added an RBI double while going 1-for-3.
On the mound, redshirt junior Nick Porretto (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva (McHenry C.C.)) was strong in relief, yielding three hits and striking out two over the final three innings.
After a scoreless opening frame, Incarnate Word sprung for two runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 advantage.
Following a 1-2-3 inning by Shaver that included a pair of strikeouts, Owings got the Eagles rolling with a leadoff double. Redshirt junior Jacob Bolton (Lewis Center, Ohio-Bishop Watterson (Sinclair C.C.)) followed with a single, putting runners at the corners for Rensel Jr. with no outs. Down in the count 0-2, Rensel Jr. ripped a double down the left field line to score Owings, before Easter cleared the bases while reaching on an error to cut UIW's lead to one, 4-3.
The Cardinals expanded their lead in the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits and three walks. With UIW in front 6-3, EMU brought House in from the bullpen. Settling in after a bases loaded walk, House struck out the next to batters he faced to escape a bases loaded jam and send Eastern back to the plate, trailing 7-3.
Incarnate Word added to its lead with a run in the sixth, en route to handing Eastern Michigan an 8-3 setback.
The Green and White look to get revenge tomorrow, Feb. 22, when the Eagles take on the Fighting Irish. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
