INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University junior women's cross country runner Abbi Stemple (Mason, Ohio- William Mason) has been selected to attend the 2019 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, April 11-14 in Orlando, Fla. Stemple is one of two Mid-American Conference student-athletes selected to attend the event that is focused on the development of attendees professionally and personally.
"I am honored to attend this forum because it will give me the opportunity to bring invaluable leadership skills back to EMU that I will contribute to our entire Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)," Stemple emphasized. "It will help me to develop individually, and will give me the chance to make an impact on my campus, conference, and in my future endeavors."
The Leadership Forum, created in 1997, has reached more than 5,000 student-athletes in its 21-year history, sending attendees back to their respective campuses with new leadership skills, while also gaining knowledge of the NCAA as a whole and exploring the relationships between personal values, core beliefs, and behavioral styles. Each Division I athletic conference office selects two student-athlete representatives from its member schools and one conference administrator to attend the event.
Stemple is in her first full-year as a member of Eastern's SAAC, joining the group in the Fall 2017 semester after a series of setbacks forced her to take time away from running. She currently acts as the group's vice president, after spending Winter 2017 as SAAC's social media chair, and has overseen the committee's Diversity and Inclusion and Mental Health awareness initiatives. The Mason, Ohio native has run in 15 meets for the Green and White, marking her career-best effort in the 5k of 18:50.86 at the 2017 GVSU Big Meet Invite, Feb. 17. Stemple is also a member of the Mid-American Conference Council of Student-Athletes. Academically, she is a five-time Dean's List member, earning a 3.81 grade point average as an elementary education major with a language arts minor.
"This is a big honor for our athletic department and for Abbi," noted Head Women's Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Sue Parks. "I'm really excited for her to have this great opportunity to represent EMU and the MAC. Abbi has had some serious setbacks athletically but she has used the time away from running to embrace her role as a SAAC representative. I'm really proud of her."
Stemple and Bowling Green State University's baseball player Ethan Good will travel to Orlando in April. For more information on the NCAA Student Athlete Leadership Forum, click here.
